BMW V8 Engine

The specifications of this new high-performance power unit alone clearly confirm the enormous progress this engine has to offer. Engine displacement is 3,999 cc, maximum output is 309 kW/420 hp. Peak torque of 400 Newton-metres or 295 lb-ft is just as impressive as the top engine speed of 8,300 rpm.

The redline is indeed impressive (just like the M5's and such!) which accounts for those nice HP #'s, but I'm really surprised it doesn't produce more torque!

What kind of crack did they feed the engineer who designed the exhaust manifold?

The exhaust gasses must be smarter than me, 'cause I cant figure out how they are supposed to make it throught that maze. And it isn't even going to a turbo! For something that complex, I would have expected a snail on there.

Am I missing somehting?

BTW, the pipes are THIIIIN walled, but still looks complex

i was kind of wondering about that myself. quite a strange twist(s) the manifold takes.

being a former Honda owner, I would guess that the high red-line is the reason for the high power with comparitivly little torque.

another guess: a computer designed the exhaust manifold.

I'd love to hear it being used in anger...

Makes sense about the redline/torque.

Would they play with the manifold that much just for sounds sake? Maybe to even out the pulses down the exhaust?

BTW, I'm guessing that thing will sound mean as all hell when opened up with intake/exhaust...

I think you combined my two thoughts. I meant that the headers were most likely designed with the help of a computer to maximize performance, not necessarily to maximize the sound quality.

but I bet she'll sound amazing.

<morning of exhaust prototype unveiling at BMW headquarters>

<manifold engineer had spent the whole night into the morning celebrating the completion of the new manifold at a local pub...and now realizes that he set his alarm for PM, not AM...he is running .5 hours late  >

<Quick morning S.S.S., grab some coffee, grab the manifold(s) sitting on the test bench, and hit the road...that is the game plan>

<Little does he know that a squirrel had died right outside his large apartment flat right before a long set of stairs>

<In a rush, he misses seeing the squirrel, catches it under foot and down the flight of stairs he goes...the manifolds which were long headers have no been squished down to shorty headers w/ a wild maze of pipe direction>

<OH $#IKKAKA comes out at the decibels of a 747 right overhead...time to face the music and take it there...try to explain everything and hope they give him an extension to make a new set to test>

<Manifold engineer arrives late, there are 50 higher up executives waiting impatiently for the unveiling...he unveils the mangled mess w/ intent to explain...>

<...he is greeted by great applause...one executive takes the podium and states that he was just expecting to see a boring long type exhaust manifold but was pleasantly relieved to see him thinking out of the box and being daring...>

<Manifold engineer is promoted to chief engineer to oversee all engineers operations>

THE END

NOTE: Hope this makes sense...I got no sleep b/c I have this crazy dream that was a mix of "Heroes", "Lost", "Eragon", "Resident Evil", "The 5th Element" and some crazy Japanese animation...very cool dream nonetheless.
