For those that receive Subaru's Drive magazine, you probably saw this.

I was very disappointed to see that it does not have Direct Injection... This is for the non-turbo version though, so maybe the turbo version will have DI. The change to rocker arms is very interesting, as is the new exhaust routing and the change over to a single overhead CAM. The newer stroke does make it a more "square" engine design.

i'm inclined to think this as well. is the new lump significantly lighter? i noticed that isn't listed in the specs...

Maybe they're doing the same as the new Ford 5.0 Coyote. It's set-up for DI, but Ford is holding it back for the mid-cycle refresh.

that was my guess, but since subaru is so late to the D.I. party, why not start off on the right foot?

Why the hell do that is my question.. ya, it brings something new to the refresh... but it also costs more money to not just implement it in the first place. They would also come out looking very good for having forward thinking engineering... but no, they have to take baby steps

well, the good news is that Hyundai is spanking Honda's ass on fuel economy so it draws some attention away. Still, given AWD, Subaru needs to up their game just to make par, let alone be a class leader (which they'll never be).

without knowing the long range plan it's difficult to speculate about the new engine. given what we DO know it is a bit of a puzzler.
perhaps this is the first step, the second is DI, the third is hybrid, the fourth is cold fusion and it all makes sense at corporate???

I believe they're changing to a DOHC design, the current eco model EJ is SOHC. The smaller bore and longer stroke is expected, smaller bores have advantages in combustion efficiency.
