Do you care where your sausage comes from?

Post by complacent »

In light of this article... How much would something like this sway you towards or away from an electronics purchase?

Do you care enough about it to not buy an Apple, Dell or HP product?

Would you still not buy and say "sucks for them" ?

I'll be honest... It's enough to think about it. And I might just base my next tech purchase (in part at least) because of reports like this. I really would like to see the outcome of a proper investigation as well as proper criminal charges (if they are warranted).

Thoughts? I don't expect this to be a very pretty thread. :(

I just can't honestly say that new iphone is to die for...

Well, this is going to take more than a sentence!

It's amazing the number of deaths that have happened there. Funny thing is, I have a VERY hard time thinking that factory is alone in this, especially after the number that have occurred there.

Conditions in a lot of developing countries are, for the most part, horrible in factories. I hate that organizations choose to produce their products in places like this. They do it solely because it's cheaper and they have contracts that say nothing like the conditions that do exist, will exist. I REALLY wish that all corporations would move operations back to the US. It's much easier to regulate working conditions here.... and oh ya, it would provide thousands of jobs to the US. The only problem is the CEO's.

It's going to be very hard to buy products only produced in the US. Sadly, very little is! I'm really not sure what the solution is. US corporations cannot see past the profit margins. We're giving billions if not trillions to a country which we know attacks us on a regular basis. Hopefully, at some point, people realize this and change starts to happen.

Nope, they won't realize this...they are busy watering their plants with Brawndo.

...But Brawndos got what plants crave. Its got electrolytes. You want us to put water on the crops instead?
Yes.
Like, the water that comes from the toilet?
Well, it doesnt have to come from the toilet, but yes. We should put water on the crops instead of Brawndo.
But Brawndo has what plants crave! Its got electrolytes!
Well, lets look at the situation. The plants arent growing, so Im pretty sure that the Brawndo isnt working. We should just try the water out instead and see if that works.
Yeah? Well, Ive never seen plants grow out of a toilet.
Okay, look - we want to get this problem solved. So we have to try a solution of some kind. Lets see if the water hypothesis works, and go from there, rather than worrying about what plants may or may not crave.
But we know what plants crave. Brawndo. Its got electrolytes.
...Okay - what are electrolytes? Do you know?
Yeah. Its what they use to make Brawndo.
But why do they use them in Bawndo? What do they do?
Theyre part of what plants crave.
But why do plants crave them?
Because plants crave Brawndo, and Brawndo has electrolytes.
Love the commentary on society in that movie!

Looks like Foxconn might be closing their factory in China. And in a not-shocking-dick-move:
The iPad manufacturer also made headlines yesterday after it announced it will no longer pay extra compensation to families of employees who kill themselves. The announcement follows a spate of suicides at its sprawling south China factory.

I think it's a smart move to cut benefits for suicide. giving them 10 years pay to kill themselves was just too good a deal for some to pass up.

As crappy as their work standards are, at least they are bringing money into their nation.

Over time, labor movements will improve life (like they did here, once upon a time when the work day was 16 hours and weekends were a fantasy).

When their internal consumerism grows, their markets will demand better wages and more 'time to relax and consume' - simply to increase buying power and turn the cogs.

No crap...

So weird to see them do a 180 and turn china into the Rockefeller-esque united states of old.

I'm thinking of many comments but they all involve an overpopulated communist China and as such are better left offline.
