Panel Filter And Intake Silencer Delete

This is going to be a bit like beating a dead horse, but I was thinking about doing the silencer delete, and I was also thinking about getting a Panel Filter either from K&N or Perrin. I have read around that Drwrx has found data on how panel filters DO improve your car a bit, but now my question is, is it worth it to

A) Do Silencer Delete
B) Get a panel Filter (Perrin or K&N)
C) Do Both
D) Leave it alone noob

I know that if I do the silencer delete, its more for sound, but for the panel filter, i am actually looking..not really for gains, but for AFR reasons, freer flowing, etc.

Is the silencer delete easy? i plan on just getting the fender plug afterwards...how does the ram intake in front still connect to the actual air box w/ filter? etc..

I removed the silencer and the ram intake and installed a K&N. it was a pain getting that silencer out but not difficult. you can hear the bypass valve and the turbo quite a bit, even stock. if you like a quite car don't do it, just do the panel filter.

IMHO, leave it at that.

Yes, there are some gains to be had with a panel/and/or CAI.

Yes, there's a good chance you'll need to tune for it.

And YES, the Subaru MAF sensor is SENSITIVE. And expensive to replace.

I've had everything from k&n panel filter to injen cai, to txs short ram to stock and back again. What am I currently using? Stock airbox, k&n filter.

For the $, I think a good alignment is a better ROI.

probably so. if you don't need to replace your air filter, wait until you do for the K&N. ROI FTW!

the snorkus delete is quick and easy, not to mention FREE (other than the cost of an elbow replacement piece). a little more noise, a slightly faster spooling turbo (a couple hundred rpm's sooner on my old baja-t). ymmv.

Yeah thats the thing i dont understand. what am i supposed to do when i take the silencer out aka how do i connect the air box w/ the ram intake peice.

Either get an elbow or leave it off and take the ram part out

Sadly, the only panel filters that have proven to add power are the foam ones (Perrin). Many years ago a bunch of tests were done using stock, STi, K&N, Purolator, and Perrin panel filters. The Perrin consistanly made 6 whp and 8 lbft. All the rest were virtually identical. The big shoker was that the #2 performer was the Purolator filter which was purchased for $7.

Don't use PVC, it can't take the heat, and when it burns or melts, the fumes are toxic.

True but I doubt something near the intake / cold air area is gonna reach this:

Maximum Temperature: 158°F 70°C
Minimum Temperature: -13°F -25°C
Autoclavable: No
Melting Point: 176°F 80°C

But if you can find something else that'd be optimal.

You could just pull the snokus and cut the silencer off.
I've known folks who did that before the days the intake elbow.

Yep, back on aught two and aught three we hacked up our snorkus intakes! No fancy elbows for us! And we liked it that way!

Yep, we did. Only problem I had was with hitting big puddles of water and getting my filter wet.

If you want an elbow and don't want to pay $20+ for it, get some 3" or 4" flexible aluminum dryer duct. Not the pansy assed stuff made with the aluminum foil covered slinky crap, but the sectioned rigid aluminum ducting.
You can find this stuff for free around the construction sites of the McMansions or spend the $8 to get your own.
Notice how Zak rhymes with hack?

mmm..i think imma just wait and buy the gp moto one. i guess i wont be using anything ghetto ten. OR i might buy a used silencer off of someone and hack that one up. but this is definitly a DIY mod i will do in the near future

keep in mind that NO ONE CAN SEE THE ELBOW unless things go seriously wrong...

also, no one will notice that you saved yourself some cash and had the satisfaction of fabricating your own part.
