well my computer science major buddy of mine had a suggestion to me..

it was


xgl + compiz > all


anyone have any experiences? im considering it....this guy really knows his stuff

For you, it makes sense :) If you're going that route, I'm going to assume you are going to use SuSe for a distro, which is pretty decent. A couple of years back, they had problems with patches distributed by their update service (basically, installing versions of libraries and such that would interfear with installed programs without updating them), but from what I understand, all of this has been reconciled with the newer versions :)

Yast and teh related tools are still kinda scary... Make sure you dd your hda1 once you get a solid baseline. Trust me on this one, you'll thank me later.
