...and installed it on a spare laptop.

based on debian, so it's not too difficult to make your way around. hell, i installed a base system, configured acpi, video, wireless, wired ethernet, sound, etc all on the first (or second, wireless was a little tricky and had to resort to ndiswrapper) try.

i'll play with it for a week and see how i feel. i still <3 my macbookpro ;)

I'm thinking I might have to try this Ubuntu out since for some reason FreeBSD doesn't like my machine.

Chuck, we can get BSD installed on your machine, no prob ;)

U isn't a bad distro at all. I'm using it for a little PVR that I built since FreeBSD doesn't support the Hauppage cards very well :(

Urgh, in that case maybe I'd better use Ubuntu then. Unless you happen to know if BSD has any problems with the pcHDTV HD-3000 card.

Okay Installed server 2003 and Ubuntu to dual boot on my spare machine at lunch (Well actually I started 2003 last night, but I digress). Will see how much I can get these two piss each other off when I get off.

probably a kernel upgrade ;) A while back I heard about the FreeBSD project implementing userland kernels. You would be able to run multiple kernels at the same time, but I never heard anything more about being able to switch the two once you had them running.

BTW, good reading on the differences between the kernels.

Correct. Ubuntu will upgrade the kernel as well as the source for individual apps/etc.

Okay, after dropping $65 on a new heatsink for this machine I'm finally going to install the Gutsy Gibbon (that's right, a gibbon is a monkey). I'll give my impressions once the upgrade is complete. In the mean time, I'm playing TF2. :D

Just found this on /. - Ubuntu and other linux distros might be killing teh j00r hard drives!!!!1

Looks like there are two arguments, one says that it is a bug in acpi-support, the other says it is due to the journaling file system. Both are interesting arguments.

More info via Launchpad.

EDIT: It looks like this issue is because of various drive manufacturers' default power management settings. Links found here, here and here.

Guess I was a little too quick to bite into teh FUD. Crap!

so how do you like it so far?

and no, the avatar is NOT as annoying as the bunny-I'm-going-to-punch-Chuck-in-the-face scream tone he had.

but it's close.
