Full article here.

"Mercedes today unveiled the 2007 CLS 350 CGI with Stratified-Charged Gasoline Injection. According to the company, it's the first car to offer a gasoline engine with piezoelectric direct injection and spray-guided combustion. The technology increases output while simultaneously improving fuel economy. The main advantage of the CGI engine lies in the stratified operating mode from which it takes its name. In this mode, the engine runs with high excess air and thus excellent fuel efficiency. The latest iteration of this technology makes it possible to extend this lean-burn operating mode to higher rpm and load ranges, for high-performance gasoline vehicles. Fuel consumption for the CLS 350 CGI is 9.1 litres per 100 km (31 mpg)."

I MUCH better explaination of it can be found here. Sounds like a great concept that became a reality. I wonder what their AFR's are like. Maybe as high as 20:1?

There was a really good article (for once) in Sport Compact Car on direct ignition.

Went into multi staged injection to provide a mix of HP and MPG.

Tuning for these things is gonna be a bitch. I think there is going to be a lot of 2nd stage injector setups for these so you don't have to worry about the microsecond timing problems.
