Jalopnik wrote:Matt Hardigree — 2012 Subaru Impreza trades style for fuel economyThe 2012 Subaru Impreza will be the most efficient AWD car in America, hitting 36 mpg on the highway when it debuts. To achieve this figure, they apparently had to make the car look as much like a bland version of the Mazda3 as possible. Or is it a Nissan Altima? Accord? We don't know, it now looks just like the rest of them.

Both four-door and five-door models will appear this month at the New York Auto Show, but so far all they've shown us is the profile of the sedan. Not a good sign. It's like when a girl on OKCupid only shows you her eyes, you know it means you don't want to see the rest.

The plain-jane Subaru will likely feature a small boxer four, as in the past, putting out somewhere around 150 horsepower. Details are scarce, both in the press release and in the design of the car.

36mpg AND awd?

So long as it doesn't look like a penis, you just described the perfect commuter car.

No doubt. And the coupe better have a :censor: turbo to make up for it.

I suspect it will have the CVT, which gets much praise from the automotive press.
I'm not going to dump on it until I see it in person.
I didn't like the current version of the Legacy at first, but it has grown on me after I've seen and sat in a few.

Wow. Clarkson was right. The era of actually have FUN, of all things, behind the wheel of car is almost over. With gas going up so high and eco-hippies creating a demand for... THINGS... like this. The days of sports cars and hot rods are coming to a close.

Smoke'em if you got'em!

Clarkson on: the end of it all

I miss quirky Suby's :( 36MPG with AWD is DAMN impressive though from a gas engine!

36 MPG is pretty impressive. My concern is for the WRX/STI. Is this what it is going to look like, but with a hood scoop?

why can't subaru design taillights worth a damn on these things? the last impreza tails that looked halfway decent were the gc's.

Um.... Maybe it's just too early (I mean, it is only 9:25AM)... Where is the diff? Maybe it's just higher in this model... but those look like bolts in the back where the damn diff should be!!!!! FWD = 36MPG Suby easy :(

Wow you guys are a judgmental bunch. To me it doesn't look that much different than the outgoing car, or the one before that...or the one before that. Even the coveted 22B is fairly nondescript without the wing, scoop and wheels.

Concurrence to this statement is dependent upon if it has AWD. If no AWD, I retract.

If it has AWD and can get 36mpg, I'd say its awesome! I liked the previous generation of Imprezas far more than the current one. I welcome the change in design, provided of course that it continues to have AWD.

i got an email from subaru regarding this new impreza. in the fine print, it definitely stated that it has a cvt and awd.

i think that's fantastic. cheap, efficient awd.

(probably slow as cold tar though)

This is partially good news...but do they offer another variant that is fwd? If not, this will be my next car used for commuting.

I will still have my blue toaster for good fun :drive: :)

My point is that the impreza has always been an econobox and it's the WRX/STi goodies that make it look cool.
