Super-Microphone Picks Out Single Voice in a Crowded Stadium

Post by Sabre »

Article
Squarehead’s new system is like bullet-time for sound. 325 microphones sit in a carbon-fiber disk above the stadium, and a wide-angle camera looks down on the scene from the center of this disk. All the operator has to do is pinpoint a spot on the court or field using the screen, and the Audioscope works out how far that spot is from each of the mics, corrects for delay and then synchronizes the audio from all 315 of them. The result is a microphone that can pick out the pop of a bubblegum bubble in the middle of a basketball game
Pretty damn cool. Follow the link for the video since I can't post it :(

Good choice putting $4,000 rims on your 1990 Honda Civic. That's like Betty White going out and getting her tits done.

Basic physics. Neat, but not all that new.
The military has done the reverse of this two decades ago.
Use an array of microphones to calculate the position of a shooter position.
Patience is the ability to idle your motor when you feel like stripping your gears

<cough>Sugar Grove</cough>

I stopped by their PX when I was on college and used to skip classes and go driving in the mountains. It was a Navy base and I did have proper ID but they still flipped their shit anyways :nana: Seriously though, the PX was like a convenience store right along the state route that goes through the middle of the facility. no gate, nada.

I've been meaning to do a drive by of that place... or at least as close as I can get!

you can drive right through the middle of it on a public road. if you really want the proper view though, skip WV altogether and head out to Dayton, VA then go west on Briery Branch to Reddish Knob (NW corner of Augusta Cty). You'll then be up at 3500ft, above Sugar Grove with a spectacular view in all directions. You can drive right to the top.

Road trip this weeknd?? I'm down.

the 'A' is Reddish Knob in VA. There's a dirt Forest Service road that connects Reddish Knob to Sugar Grove, WV. Most people who live in Sugar Grove take it over to Harrisonburg, VA to hit the shopping/food amenities (about an hour away).

I'd be ALL about it, but Busch Gardens is this weekend and next weekend is full of helping people move and a wedding!
