like the difference between going 200 mph and 203 mph: 203 mph is faster, but...
Actually, it is more like comparing 120mph to 200mph to be more realistic and there is a huge difference. I really doubt that you saw real 1080P b/c the only hardware that can handle that is the HDMI v 1.3 (more than doubles the bandwidth vs. the older v1.2) which unless you are filthy rich, you don't have access to a TV/monitor that has that hardware built in b/c they are not out on the market yet. Most 1080P can upconvert the 1080i HDMI v1.2 input up to its native 1080P resolution...and of course some upconverter technology is much better than others.
I would also suggest waiting for the new HDTVs to come out if you haven't already to get the newer v1.3 hardware built in.
Also, there is a huge difference between upconverted DVD to 1080P vs. real 1080P content.
Also, with a larger TV/Monitor 60"+ you can really see the differences in the resolution.
It just so happens that the PS3 already has the HDMI v1.3 built in so all you would need is a HDTV w/ HDMI v1.3.

yeah, there is no way that I was in a high-end store with a 1080i and 1080p display set up. what was I thinking?
maybe the store was lying?
maybe their setup was faulty?
maybe I'm finished with this thread?

No, I am not saying they weren't 1080i and 1080P, I was saying that they didn't have the new v1.3 HDMI hardware to display true, non-upconverted 1080P video. There is no HDTVs out in any store that have the new v.13 hardware built in. So basically you were just viewing 1080i and 1080i upconverted to 1080P which will not be the same as true, non-upconverted 1080P video. That is all I am saying.

Just saw this pic posted of BestBuy's "Retail Insider" over in "MAIC"land:
Looks like I was right about the component HD DVD players that would play both formats.
