DROID X, DROID 2 Won't Allow Custom ROMs

Post by Sabre »

Article
Various reports are indicating that both the Motorola DROID X and DROID 2 smartphones will ship with a locked and encrypted (aka digitally signed) bootloader. This will mean that owners will not have the ability to flash custom ROMS that are not officially approved and signed by Motorola. This will also put a strain on developers who sell ROOT-only apps on the Android Market.

So much for the "open" platform.

Although the original DROID isn't locked, the move follows similar actions taken with the internationally-launched Motorola Milestone. Apparently Motorola didn't like the idea of consumers flashing the DROID with custom ROMs, and thus locked out owners and developers with the next smartphone release. The Android modding community was outraged, however Motorola felt justified in its move.

"Securing the software on our handsets, thereby preventing a non-Motorola ROM image from being loaded, has been our common practice for many years," explained Lori Fraleigh in this Motorola blog back in February. "This practice is driven by a number of different business factors. When we do deviate from our normal practice, such as we did with the DROID, there is a specific business reason for doing so. We understand this can result in some confusion, and apologize for any frustration."

Naturally hackers will find a way to modify the DROID X and DROID 2--it may take longer than seen with the DROID, but it will eventually happen. Still, the modding community has options, as Motorola apparently suggested the Nexus One, the T-Mobile G1 or the HTC Dream as platforms for developing unofficial ROMS.

The Motorola DROID X will be available online and in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores Thursday for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement.
Well, that sucks... Someone needs to find the decryption key... or just write a bootloader to overwrite the encrypted one :)

pretty shitty that a company thinks it can tell you what to do with your device after you've purchased it from them.

oh i still want a droid x... don't get me wrong.

the iphone 4 is a giant bag of fail and i think mr. jobs and company are doing themselves quite the disservice by "playing it off" like this. for me it's starting to become a matter of principle. sure i could get an iphone 4 and a case in order to circumvent the antenna (super egregious lame fuck-up) issues, but on principle i don't feel the public SHOULD have to plunk down extra coin just to get a nominally-functioning device that should have worked correctly from the factory.

well, that and at&t's network is meh at best.

What's hilarious is all they have to do is give away their bumpers with the phone and the complaints would vanish. They sell them for what $30? It can't cost them more than $2 to make.

I'm very (read: not at all) surprised that there hasn't been much coverage on this bricking issue.

Could you imagine the outrage if your laptop required hardware repair because you tried to install a different operating system?

Or what if you tried to unlock your phone to use on another carrier? Is it okay then?

What the :censor: is that :censor: ??!?! To intentionally cause a hardware failure due to software "tampering"? I sure hope I'm wrong.

I read a report that the bumper costs Apple $1 to manufacture.
They sell it for $29.
This signal issue has cost Jobs millions in stock value.

Actually, I'm surprised it wasn't Apple that first introduced the auto-bricking "feature" - it seems right up their alley.

Personally if I had money I'd be buying Apple stock before this press conference.

I found an update from Motorola via phandroid.

Looks like it won't completely brick it, but it'll be about as useless as mammaries on a male bovine.

Pfffft. Forget all those.

Get this : http://www.aavamobile.com/downloads.php

Totally open.
Runs linux as the OS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meego)
FAST AS BALLZ (look for quake3 demos on this thing. It kills everything FPS-wise (i.e. 100 fps).)

I don't follow, what's wrong with supporting multiple cell systems?

that looks like some serious hardware!

Separate thought:

Ouch. It would appear that the Droid X has the same antenna problem as the iPhone 4.
