I went ahead and pre-ordered this morning. it seems more like a Service Pack than something you should have to pony up $30 bucks for, but then again it is Apple we're talking about.

if by service pack you mean recompiling every native app, drivers and the kernel to run on a 64-bit platform, then yes... it's a service pack.

If you want to do it on the super cheap, snag a mini 9 or 10v off dell's site or fleabay. They've just about got everything in the gold master running properly on that little dinker of a netbook.

edit: http://mydellminiforums.com has a pretty active community that is into hackintoshing. worth checking out.

Yep, read about it this morning. It's their move to 64bit, so quite a large one. I'm hoping they have the problem resolved with it not booting into 64b mode out of the box (except on Xserve) worked out before shipping it! Kind of funny that you can hold down 6 and 4 while booting it to force it into 64b mode :)

OS X6 comes packed with antivirus software, maybe.
If the online chatter is to be believed, Apple's very soon to be released Snow Leopard has in its code new protection for fighting malware.

Would you like to spend less?

I guess my first rebuttal to the rather, ahem, passionate Mr. Kennedy would be this: If 10.6 is so derivative of 7 and 7 is merely Vista R2 (his words), why's 7 so expensive? Jackass.

fanbois will be fanbois, regardless of their particular affliction, right?

(yes, i'm well aware that it goes both ways.)

For those taking the plunge, please make sure you check out the program compatibility list and the printer compatibility list.

There are some big s/w products with specific version compatibilities and incompatibilities. This will help save some grief.

A twenty three page review over at arstechnica is "the biggest review of a $30 product ever." and very much worth a read if you want to read about all the little things (filesystem enhancements, etc)

w00t?
