How's the market?

Post by Osiros »

Hey all,

So - long story short - there's serious talk on this side about a return to NoVA. Various reasons but the bottom line is that the past 2 years have yielded nothing of what we set out to accomplish in moving down here. We miss our friends, we miss the area.....it may, in fact, be time to come back home.

The biggest "scare" factor as these plans are formulated is the job market for me. She's pretty much set - no real concerns. I, on the other hand, have some serious concerns about finding work, especially given what happened before we left the area. Combine that with being in the middle of a global economic "hiccup" and it's a pretty serious thing to have to contemplate. Not to mention that right now I'm in a role that gives me about a 0.00231% chance of having to deal with a layoff again. It's local city government, we're funded year to year, and my past experiences have made me a *very* valuable member of their team. If only the paycheck showed it.   :notcool:

So, my question, fellow nerds and geeks, is what's your take on what's happening up there these days? Are people waking up in fear of losing their jobs on a daily basis? Is there enough work to go around? I have a pretty average skill set...your standard Tier 2/3 hands on support, some systems and network administration, a little project management, and an MCDST on the way to an MCSA. My question is not whether I'd find a j0rb so much as how long it might take to find said j0rb and whether the j0rb would be a fairly stable one. We wouldn't have nearly the same resources in place for the move back as we had for the move away so time would truly be of the essence.

Am I an idiot for considering this at this point in time or is there a way to actually make it viable?

Thanks for the leads and info.

Yeah - I saw that link that chuckles put up. Actually, it was posted not too far into our initial considering of making this move. Was interesting timing. :-) Thanks for the lead on your friend too.....can you PM me your email address so I can shoot some info your way to get a conversation started? Would definitely be interested in working there. Big company, lots of stuff going on - good potential.

I have not heard of anybody that I work with in this or other companies getting axed. So from my point of view, it is pretty stable.

On a side note, I'll be training at the Amphib base Little Creek in two weeks. Staying in Newport News. Is that anywhere close to you? I would love to fit a little drive-by in.

23462 is my back yard. Email or PM when you can and we'll set something up. Much happier to hear this than Newport News....that side of the water is always a bear to get to.

My hope is that there is a company out there willing to process a clearance for me. The last place I was at before we left shut down before we got that far so I'm a touch stuck where that's concerned. But, not unlike a certification was back in the day, I'm fully aware that a clearance is a golden ticket these days. I've also seen though that 99% of them want you to already possess one prior to bringing you on. I can understand that. My understanding is that it is a relatively expensive undertaking. Who knows....maybe an agency or contract recruiter would open the door.

Thanks dude....will definitely have a look.

Many thanks to all for the suggestions. I'm happy to see possibilities because, in all honestly, I was expecting to see things like "yeah, you're f'ing insane". I think it's viable and, while the time table may have to be a little flexible, it looks like there's definitely a way to make this happen.

one reason why houses are still so expensive here is because there are actually jobs here.

House prices are even increasing (month over month) inside the beltway in some areas. Year over year is still down. Some folks are saying the month over month growth is usual season variation (summer time more people buy/sell because of school years) so we'll see what happens in the fall.

FYI, the job market out here must be hungry for people (to an extent) because I'm starting to get hits on my Monster resume that I haven't updated in months.
