to not enable "landscape" keyboard in all apps is just an AMAZING oversight that could (should) have been corrected with a patch 3 months in.
to not allow MMS messages in 2009 when all the pieces are there (in the 3G) is an oversight.
copy/paste has been an issue since launch.

am I correct in that 2/3 of these issues have been addressed by 3rd party vendors but require you to jail-brake the phone?

While I agree that it's an AMAZING oversight, I'm also willing to bet it meant a significant app rewrite and not just some little "patch" that could be delivered 3 months down the line. They've slowly been feeding the landscape features into more and more applications, one at a time. This upcoming release happens to include 4 more apps that will rotate.
Mr Kleen wrote:to not allow MMS messages in 2009 when all the pieces are there (in the 3G) is an oversight.
I agree. It has been fixed via third party for a long time now. Do keep in mind there are blackberries for sale today that DO NOT allow MMS messaging. Apple's not the only one out there. Also, even with the third party programs available, AT&T is not allowing MMS programs to work on iPhones unless you reeeely sweet-talk someone in customer support. Blame that one on the network. When I had an original iPhone (non-3G) hacked and unlocked and on T-Mobile, I was able to MMS away to my heart's content using the SwirlyMMS app. I say all this to say that there are solutions available.
Mr Kleen wrote:copy/paste has been an issue since launch.
Agreed as well. Keep in mind that WinMo had to rely on third-party programs for c/c/p on their software (Vito Copy Paste is actually STILL used.) Again, Apple isn't the only major player with this feature either lacking or not fully utilized. WinMO has 2009 devices that still need this software, as does Helio's latest release.
Mr Kleen wrote:am I correct in that 2/3 of these issues have been addressed by 3rd party vendors but require you to jail-brake the phone?
You are correct. There are apps for copy+paste (Clippy, cydia), MMS (SwirlyMMS, cydia). Email landscape will require a new mail.app. You can currently SMS in landscape with iRealSMS and a few others through Cydia. So mebbe 3/4 or 2.5/3?

Mr Kleen wrote:and don't get me started on :censor: Verizon and their :censor: crippled phones... :banghead:
Verizon has made strides in opening their devices and features, but they're still not at the level of openness shared by most GSM providers (Sprint is actually pretty good about this as well.) That being said, :censor: Verizon until they fix their attitude. Great CDMA network though...

mms is stupid and highly overrated. they can keep it.

landscape email and sms is a must imo. the landscape app for email colin refers to is firemail, which is great but only lets you write in landscape if you're composing a new message (since it's a separate app that you open, then in turn "send" the message to your mail client). sooooo... replying to email forces you to use portrait mode typing, which i'll admit i'm getting used to but at which i'll never be great.

the more providers i jump to (or whore myself out to, as it were), the more i realize they're all scum. you just gotta find "your brand" of scum with which you can put up. long ago i theorized that cell providers in the u.s. have an interesting trend - the better the network, the worse the phone selection/customer service. verizon's been top dog for a while, and they've always had the crappiest cell phones from yesteryear and customer service akin to speaking with a half-dead camel. conversely, sprint's network quality has blown monkey balls for years and always had the best (and least crippled) phones and pda's out there (and pretty good customer service from what i hear/read/remember). these days the lines are starting to get blurred as the "lesser" providers catch up in terms of network quality. soon they will all suck equally :rolllaugh: .

One other thing to add on this and I haven't really heard anyone talk about it. It's dawned on me the past few days how nice it would be to be able to attach pictures within the mail app itself. I've had to say "ohhh hey, I have a picture of that on my phone...I'll email it to you" go to pictures, and then send as email. Wouldn't it be nice to just attach right from within the message?

Or did I just epically fail because it is possible and I've missed it all these times?

i use it several times a week, but not quite daily. that's why it's one the shortcomings I was glad 3.0 addressed. now I'm just disappointed that 3.0 won't be out until 1.5 months after my contract is up with stupid Helio.

FWIW, I've been using MMS on my 2.2.1 iPhone successfully as of late. SwirlyMMS FTW!

Quoted for truth. I caught on to this years ago. I stuck with the Verizon network, because despite shittier phones, it's better to have network access and be able to make a call, than not to be able to connect to a network at all. I've always like Sprint's phone selection, as some of their phones were straight outta Japan (and at the time had many more features than competitors phones, although I don't know how this stands presently).

The last iPhone update and the upcoming 3.0 update satisfy the majority of my needs (no Flash capability is the biggest downside, however). Luckily, my contract with Verizon is up in December, and ATT's network here isn't as patchy as on the East Coast. For that matter, I spend increasgingly smaller amounts of time in odd, rural places. I'm glad Apple offers a phone that features the level of operability that I need, although that level is only slightly above the average user. It helps that I already made use of iCal, Addressbook, Mail, etc.

i'll be flat-out honest as not only a verizon employee but a registered hater of all things at&t. i've been pleasantly surprised with the call/signal quality as of late with at&t's network. in the dc/nova/md area, at least. i was expecting crap. i've found that it's not only as good in most places as verizon, but better in some.

Hopefully they are continually addressing weak spots in their network, by at his point the iPhone is such a draw, that I would put up with a sligtly weaker network. The first ten wasn't, but the the second was, and definitely software update 3.0

I've heard on other sites that this may/may not hose your visual voicemail. Some say it does...some say they have no issues. Your mileage may vary, some restrictions apply, see site for details.....

updating to 3.0 turned my phone into a brick. literally a brick. couldn't even make emergency calls with it. went into restore mode and wouldn't get out. tried restoring, tried restoring all s/w versions, different usb ports, different local accounts, different computer, uninstalled/reinstalled itunes, went into dfu mode and tried restoring from there... all the tricks people could come up with.

fucker was dead.

made a "genius" bar appointment at the one store that had openings today (tyson's). took an hour to get there from rosslyn thanks to the storm completely fucking up every road out there. got there as they were "last call"ing my name. smug bastard behind the counter tells me it's because my vista box is running antivirus software. don't think so, chief... haven't run antivirus s/w in years. don't see the point. i'm not dumb, so i don't click on suspicious crap. whaddya know??? my machine has never had an infection (yes, i scan it from time to time with free scanners)!! so he continues about his little smug anti-windows diatribe, in the middle of which i tell him to spare me the bullshit and fix the damned thing or give me a new one. he goes off into his little smug corner to restore it. oh snap... he can't either! i guess my tale was true!

yeah... i killed the thing. got a new one on apple's dime. w00t.

I've got 3.0 jailbroken and with the AT&T 5.0 carrier profile. Me likey.

Memory management is quite better so far, though that is in comparison to the 2.2.1 I had with many Cyda installed apps. Interestingly enough, there are only a few apps I really felt compelled to install from Cydia this time around - most every glaring omission was addressed by apple themselves. Tethering is nice and easy now, but I haven't done too much looking around to see how it is actually accomplished. Previously I was using iphonemodem zsrelay (wrapped the session in ssh) and I had a certain, ahem, comfort level with that.

(I like the new voice recording app. It works in the background. Nice if you attend a lot of meetings and/or training and need to do other things whilst recording.)

So far I'm pretty pleased... but it's only been a day now. I've also got teh MMS options in settings, but I can't send mms yet. Guessing it's something on AT&Ts end and not the phone. Guess I'll keep waiting.
