Do we have an iPhone apps thread yet?

Post by complacent »

I figured there's a few of us (with varying degrees of satisfaction) who have iPhones now. \

What apps are you using the most?

Here's mine:

- Solebon (app store, $.99) - 30 card games, keeps me busy.

- Twittelator (app store, free) - yea. um. twitter. (Point at me and laugh, I know.)

- To Do (app store, free) - best todo list i've found yet.

- NES (cydia, free) - I play Dragon Warrior, Punch-Out or FF when not playing cards

- Cycorder (cydia, free) record video and sound. Works pretty dang well.

- Wikipanion (app store, free) - nice, easy way to wiki around.

- Mobile Terminal (cydia, free) - stores procedures with gestures, works great!

- AirSharing (app store, free) - Turns phone into a wifi NAS. neat-o.

- Firemail (app store, free) - Landscape email. Ahhh, bout damn time.

- SwirlyMMS (cydia, lic req.) - MMS. If you don't feel like emailing.

- Search (cydia, free) - search EVERYTHING. Awesome app.

- Bossprefs (cydia, free) - better than the default settings.app

- iPhoneModem zsrelay (cydia, free) tethering app. Will wrap the whole session with SSH. Way cool.

I've got plenty of others, but those are the apps that I use the most. Anyone else got any cool stuff?

Let me see if I can come up with anything that hasn't already been mentioned:

Say Who (apps store, free): voice dialing, gotta love it.

Twitterific (apps store, free): Twitter app. I <3 to tweet.

Categories (cydia, free): organize your apps into folders

Sportacular (apps store, free): Sports updates from any sport that people who drink beer should care about

Remote (apps store, free): control itunes and appletv from the phone

Last.fm (apps store, free): internet radio from your Last.fm account

Winterboard (cydia, free): customize the look of the phones graphics

GasBag (apps store, free): find gas when your on the road and the gas light won't let you wander aimlessly

Midomi/ Shazam (apps store, free): answer all trivia questions about the song currently playing in the bar. Who sung it, what album, what label, etc.

Cameraman (apps store, free): Photo Hunt, picture matching game that doesn't cost you a dollar a play.

MobileFinder (cydia, free): graphically browse and modify aspects of the filesystem (mostly works)

Woot Watch (apps store, free): great for monitoring woot-offs when you're away from you desk.

Four Free (apps store, free): Connect Four, i find it addictive

Sol Free (apps store, free): Four kinds of solitaire, for no money. Great time killer.

Marble mash (apps store, free): Labyrinth game that uses gyros. Futuristic!

I think those are some of the more important ones. I have a lot of shovelware on here I need to get rid of. OH, and by the way. AirSharing is $6.99 now.

Downloading Google Earth. Half-assed review forthcoming.

EDIT: It works pretty well! Better that it does on my Powerbook. The map tilts with the angle of phone and you use your fingers to pan, scan, and rotate the map. Is it useful? Not really. It's a little too slow and choppy for that (running on 3G). Plus the screen is to small to make out any smaller than an office building.

yerp! grabbed that one as soon as I read about it on dealnews. Key management is sooo nice and easy.

BTW, if you don't currently do so, check out http://dealnews.com from time to time. They have a section dedicated to iPhone apps and which ones are free or on sale. Great way to score apps for free or on the cheap.

Been playing around with a bunch of random apps. found a few that I liked:

PdaNet (Cydia, free) I thought this was up here already. Meh, well. It allows tethering between your computer and the phone to get to the internets from anywhere. Open app, receive internet.

Air Mouse (App Store, $5.99) First App I actually paid for. Let's you use the phone as a wireless keyboard and mouse to a WIN or OSX computer over Wifi.

CoolIris (App Store, free) Just like the browser extension but now it's ported to the iPhone.

TWC (App Store, free) Downloaded this one today and already I like it. From The Weather Channel you get detailed weather reports, hourly, 36 hour, and 10 day forecasts. Even get video reports for the weather in your area.

the movies app is pretty handy. very easy to use and quick.

google earth is neat. not particularly handy, but neat.

joost has a lot of potential, but it needs a better selection of vids. it's also a bit buggy (crashed several times) and slow to load videos.

melodis is awesome. i never used voice dialing on any phone until this app. it always understands me, even when i slur (good for drunk dialing!).

Yeah the Google Earth is cool but pretty much useless. But according to a Gizmodo article people seem to like the useless programs.

List of Most Downloaded iPhone Apps is Full of Frivolous Crap
Would you like to know more?

I will say that of that list I currently have four, of the less frivolous, Apps on my phone.

some i like since breakin' earlier (i'm sure i'll add more later):

five icon dock (cydia, free) - pretty much self explanatory

iFarty (cydia, free) - yep

status notifier (cydia, free) - places email/sms/mms/calendar/etc icons in top bar if you have pending messages/reminders

notifier widget (cydia, free) - shows said status messages referenced above on locked screen.

The dev team has an unlock now!!!1

You did remember to keep your baseband firmware at 2.11.07, didn't you? ;)

I'll (happily) be keeping a machine at 10.5.5 and my phone at 2.1 until after the new year. w00t.

This information would have been greatly appreciated about a month ago... A local sim would have been a godsend. Oh well, there's always next time!

I still haven't gone up to 2.2 yet. Haven't wanted to try to backup all of my jailbreak apps.
*searches interwebz*
The complications come when you have a jailbroken device and you want to upgrade. Say you are running 2.0.2 and have a lot of Cydia apps installed. You want to upgrade but you don’t want to lose these apps. You may have a lot of customizations, icons hidden, and other things. If you upgrade, you will find your hidden icons are still hidden but the apps required to unhide them are not yet installed.
I think there's an program for that though.

*searches interwebz again*

Yep, it's called aptbackup. Downloading now.

Twitter peeps - check out Tweetie. I've found my go-to Twitter app. Only bad thing about it is that it won't hold your place in your timeline like Twitterific does. Other than that it's a great app for satisfying the Twitt-urge......

^^^ +1. Pandora has been a lifesaver at work during extremely slow, mind-numbingly boring days (that's pretty much all of them). What's nicer is that my stations have gotten exponentially smarter at understanding what I want since I have time to rate everything that's played.

Finally got this phone updated to 2.2. I hate having to go through rearrange all of my apps and redo all of my settings back to the way it was before the upgrade (which is I hadn't done the update yet) the whole process took about two hours. BUT, I'm on 2.2 now so what's the big whup?
