Go black or stay w/ stockers...

Post by sirwilliam »

Well, I about messed myself when I saw these 18x8 black Ultraleggras on another WRB FSXT:

I think I might have to get rid of my silver stock 17" FSXT STi wheels and go w/ these. Then I could get some BBKs to fit. What do you guys think?

Maybe I am just delusional or semi-colorblind but I like them...maybe this is why I used to wear navy blue and black before a long time ago before my wife yelled at me and why I have trouble differentiating between my navy blue and black GAP t-shirts in certain light.

Plus, the wheels are too @#$# expensive. Oh well. I did think about getting another set of silver 18x8 RPF1s to go w/ the gold. What do you guys think? Or should I just stay w/ the gold and my stockers...probably should because it is cheaper in the long run and don't need anything fancy for the winter.

i seriously don't understand why you don't want to use the stock fsxt wheels for winter. they're HOT and you already own them. then again, i have wheel lust from time to time as well  .

The practical/smart side of me says to just keep the stockers to use for the winter. Less hassle and don't have to spend extra money...plus they will work w/ the dinky donut spare that came w/ the car...so for safety reasons that would be a good thing...especially in the winter. I can still get new brakes that will fit under the stock FSXT STI wheels so they are good enough.

The impractical side of me wanted to get another set of larger 18s (plus I am a sucker for variety and change...to an extent) so that I could get larger brakes to fill up the area visible in the wheel and to stop even better...but I think the subaru 4pot/2pots should work as well as upgrading to brembos or some other kind of BBK.

if your stock wheels were ugly, i could totally understand. the fsxt wheels are bangin' though, and if you can clear a bbk all the better.

Unfortunately, the stockers don't clear a BBK. No biggie. I have come to my senses and will keep my stock wheels...for now

Even the stock 16" will clear 4pot/2pots. How big a brake kit are you considering?

Personally, I'd have a tough time arguing anything larger than that for a street car.

Also, how $Texas mad do you want to be when you hit a curb in the snow?

(I'd say keep the stockers)

Well, I was thinking brembos or RB BBKs but subaru 4pot/2pots should be sufficient. Good point about the snow...didn't think about that one. Maybe I can find some 18" steelies for the winter that would clear BBKs? No, I will just keep the stockers. I definitely want to upgrade the stock brakes prior to install of my 18G, though. I have some HPS pads and lines for front and rear but may just hold off install and sell them in lo of getting the 4pot/2pots.

I can speak from experience, the 4pot/2pot is more than sufficient.

Hell, there are folks in SCCA who campaign with stock calipers.

I think the BBK's get the whole "unnecessary proliferation" that happens with turbos.

The only reason I would upgrade to Brembos would be to swap hubs to the 05+ 5x114.3 front hubs to alleviate the front bearing knockback issues the 5x100 hubs are prone to.

...and I would only do that if I was regularly tracking the car.

or if someone gave them to me.

(just my opinion)

I guess it's time for me to chime in on brakes.

Some time ago a writer reviewing the 06 WRX commented that he believed the subaru 4 pot/ 2 pot brakes might be just as good as the STi Brembos. (I can't recall the mag, as at the time I was getting 6, but I think it was SCC.)

Some months later they did a test with a stock STi and the 06 WRX TR with summer tires (not R compound) on light wheels (Gram Lights) and upgraded pads (Axxiss Ultimates if I recall correctly). The results were as follows.
in the 30-0 test the WRX stopped shorter by a couple of feet
in the 60-0 test the two were virtually identical
in the 80-0 test the Brembos stopped shorter by a couple of feet.
The writer was convinced (as he had surmised) that the Subaru 4 pot / 2 pot brakes were as good as the STi brembos.

Yeah, I remember there being a couple articles/comparisons. I would only get the larger brakes for the bling and fill factor for the larger wheels...but I came to my senses and decided just for the suby 4pot/2pots.
