Researchers Discover Gene That Blocks HIV

Post by Sabre »

Stephen Barr, a molecular virologist in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, says his team has identified a gene called TRIM22 that can block HIV infection in a cell culture by preventing the assembly of the virus. 'When we put this gene in cells, it prevents the assembly of the HIV virus," said Barr, a postdoctoral fellow. "This means the virus cannot get out of the cells to infect other cells, thereby blocking the spread of the virus.

Yet another thing that I hope happens in my lifetime: A vaccine for HIV. I've had a few friend taken by HIV/AIDS and it's something I'd love to see stop happening.

Problem with that is there are still lots of STD's (think herpes) that are not curable....

Actually, the bigger problem is that I wonder if something like this will ever make it to market. Sad as it is to say, the drug companies have realized there is no money in a cure.

that is true, but do you think governments will let them get away with that? i hate to say it but if there ever is a cure found, it will be a hot ticket for a while, and I'm sure they could sell it for a pretty penny.
