MANN Provent 200 Air/Oil seperator

Well, I was contemplating getting the Lingenfelter Air/Oil seperator but saw someone selling a used Provent 200 for only $60 shipped. I looked at the highly detailed PDF: PROVENT 200 PDF

I found that not only was the Provent 200 identical to the one that Lingenfelter was selling but it was ~$25 cheaper (BTW, the cheapest I have seen the PROVENT 200 go for brand new is $129 w/o shipping).

Here is a pic of the Lingenfelter one:

If you go back to the PDF on the PROVENT 200 do you see a difference. Yeah, me neither.

Not sure if this separator is too large for my tastes in the engine bay but we will see.

Bryan: Separates the oil from the air in your vacuum hoses. Pretty nice if you have lot's of blow-by.

Actually, one hopes that it catches it and stores it...most time it doesn't get all of it and some still gets by but it does make a difference vs. not having anything at all. I recommend at least having a catch can on your turbo engine. The PROVENT 200 is just a little more sophisticated catch can that does a better job at collecting the oil vapor and gives you the ability to return the collected oil.

I was pointing out the fact that your explanation also applies to catch cans.

I also think that the words "more sophisticated" and "one hopes that it (works)" don't necessarily sway the uninitiated when used in the same parag.

And I also thought that Julian made the same point in fewer words.

That's all, no biggie.

Sure. If it was no biggie why would you reply then? And then post saying "Words, words, a lot of words" is like saying "yeah, yeah, blah, blah, blah".

I was just trying to state that the standard catch can doesn't come w/ some form of collecting medium so basically the vapor goes in from one hose, swirls around in a box like area and then goes out another hose...so you would hope that it would collect/catch the vapor. Julian was stating that it would catch the oil (implying that all oil vapor traveling through would be caught which is false)...and everyone that knows catch cans and how they work would know that but a newcomer to the catch can wouldn't. That is what I was trying to emphasis so he would better understand it.

I apologize to all for trying to help a fellow member better understand something by expanding on a general explanation and in the future I will make sure that never happens again. Geez.

And if someone wants to get on me about getting slightly peeved on this. Don't b/c everyone else does the same thing. And I am not upset anymore b/c I said my peace. And, yes, I am still tired and sick.

Ever seen recirculated oil in a catch can? You really want to put that back in the engine?
Do you pee in a filter and recycle that?

ArFab has just built a recirculating air/oil separator. They are in the last phases of engineering it and it should go into production soon

Sorry to jump in late on this, but I have a genuine question. Both serious explanations and Julian's explanations are welcome.

Like Tallen says, do you really want oil that contains HC and CO recirculating? What they taught us at school is that car oil has become cleaner thanks to efficient removal of blowby gases. It seems counter to my armchair engineer logic that oil, that has been blasted by said gases if passing through this filter, is placed back in the system.

Furthermore, it seems like the amount of oil returned would be negligible, and that where you are wasting oil is really just in the lubrication of the cylinder walls.

The Mann-Hummel website mentions needing to conform to stricter oil separation legislation of Euro 4. Does anyone have readily available information on the numbers that Euro 4 expects? I wasn't aware that we were monitoring the burning rate of oil.

there are turbo cars running around with hundreds of thousands of miles on them that don't have catch cans. they seem to be doing OK.

I would only worry about a catch can (separator, whatever...) if I had a very large aftermarket turbo running much higher boost then stock.
