I want to drop kick it. Anyone else hate this stupid piece of crap "smart" phone as much as me? I got it about a year ago and it's been nothing but problems since. It randomly shut itself off two nights ago and refuses to boot up.

I was going to master reset but at the prompt screen I remembed that the computer that I had my contacts backed up on was wiped, so I hit no and now it's suck at the "continue booting... please wait, etc etc etc. Please do not remove the battery" screen.

If you ever consider buying this junk phone, do yourself a favor and just go with something else. Preferably something that wasn't built by motorola and preferably something that doesn't have WINDOWS MOBILE

In fact I think they need new marketing pitch.

Now that I got that off my chest. Most of you guys know your cell-phone tech better than I. So if I can convince verizon to NOT give me another Q, what should I go with? Blackberry is an option, but I wanted to see if you had any real good ideas.

well since absolutely none of us know what you're looking for in a phone, your price ceiling, quality of the various networks in your area up in PA, how about you do some soul searching and get back to us?

well something that can keep everything organized. Preferably in the $2-300 range. The verizon network up here is pretty good. Digital signal everywhere except one area.

Pretty much all the blackberrys are in my kind of price range. I don't know much about the treos. Any input on those?

The 8703e and the 8830 world edition are the current ones that I'm very much considering if I do end up gong with a new phone.

colin and chuck can chime in on the treos. i know chuck pretty much hates his.

as far as blackberries, your only options on vzw are the 8703e, the 8830, and the pearl. i've used the first 2 extensively. i prefer the 8703e, even though it's a little bit older and bigger than the 8830. it's rock solid (literally). i beat the ever loving christ out of mine and it never... NEVER failed once. i also prefer the 8703e's keyboard layout/backlighting. more of a tactile response from the keys and they're spaced out as opposed to the 8830 which feels crammed and has piss poor backlighting. the speakerphones on both are fantastic. the 8830 has the center trackball wheel whereas the 8703e still uses the "old school" side scrolling wheel. i like both, although i'm starting to warm up to the trackball.

the 8830 has a microsd slot for expandable memory. the 8703e doesn't. dunno if that's a factor for you, but yeah.

colin has the pearl and seems to love it. the form factor is just about perfect but it comes at a price, and that price is the "suretype" keyboard. 2 letters assigned to each button, so you have to teach it the words you prefer to type.

i recently jumped ship to t-mobile so i could have the blackberry curve, which in my opinion combines the best of the pearl and the 8703e into one kickass device.

El zorro had a Treo and seemed to like it - except for the occassional crashes. Which I don't understand because I have a Palm Pilot (Tungsten E2) and it hardly ever crashed. It must be the cell portion of the tech.

I've heard good things about both Blackberry and Treo's running Palm (not Windows Mobile, obviously).

When I was working in LA with kevin I had a chance to use his 8730e for a bit and liked it. This all comes down to verizon and if they'll try to charge me an arm and a leg to switch to a different phone (which they might and I'll be stuck with just a new Q)

If you're going to stay with Verizon, get a Blackberry. Whether it's an 8703, 8830, or 8130 - they're all nice phones and will do what smartphones should.

They WON'T:

- have touchscreens

- do emulators

- the same 99900 bajillion applications available as win mob

They WILL:

- Be ROCK SOLID RELIABLE

- organize email, contacts, calendar, notes, tasks - very well!

- provide a similar wap-ish innArwebs

- not crash like win mob

I made the switch about a year ago and haven't looked back. If I want to txt/email/chat/organize/navigate - this thing is tits. And. It. Does. Not. Crash.

^^^ +1. I've had 3 blackberry smartphones now and have loved them all. And they don't crash. The lack of 3G kinda stinks but the performance of edge isn't bad considering the resolution of the tiny screen. There are many FREE third party applications that allow you to: IM, GPS Navigate ( Goog maps, Yahoo GO ), Browse the intarwebs ( Opera, built in browser ), SSH ( MidPSSH ), IRC, etc...

I'd highly recommend checking out the curve, which seems to be coming out with wifi added on as well.

Okay, so my 2nd Verizon Razor still sucks balls. Where is a good place to get a blackberry for use w/ Verizon when the time comes?

I don't hate my Treo 680. I just want to kick it into a river for all the crap it won't do. Such as real-time email, multitasking, having a decent web browser, GPS and WiFi.

I did just get an AT&T only update for mine which gave me the ability to do MP3 ringtones, connect a bluetooth GPS, Get MobiTV (for $10 a month) , and IM with AIM, MSN, and Yahoo. But the IM client is pretty much worthless since the machine doesn't multitask so well. But it's not a terrible device although it does feel a bit antiquated. The PalmOS is due for a serious overhaul.

So I'm looking to get a Blackberry 8820. Yeah I'd be losing the camera and the ability to play Super Mario and Tetris when I'm bored. But I'd be getting a phone that I could possibly do a lot more with.
