What is Jungle Disk?

Jungle Disk is an application that lets you store files and backup data securely to Amazon.com's S3 ™ Storage Service.

* Store an unlimited amount of data for only 15¢ per gigabyte
* No monthly subscription fee, no startup fee, no commitment
* Your data is fully encrypted at all times
* Data is stored at multiple Amazon.com datacenters around the country for high availability
* Access files directly from Windows Explorer, Mac OSX Finder, and Linux
* Automatically backup your important files quickly and easily

Unlike other services, with Amazon S3 ™ there is no mimimum and no maximum amount of data you can store. You pay only for the actual amount of storage you are using.
So the nuts and bolts - they give you an application which impliments WebDAV between your PC and Amazon S3 (they also GPL'd an app that does this, incase they disappear you're covered). They encrypt the data via SSL for transport, and also encrypt the individual files before they leave your machine (so they are stored at S3 encrypted, 256 AES, and you set the key). Storage is truly pay-for-what-you-use. 5GB file size limit, unlimited files, unlimited bandwidth... The software does a local cache, so if you use a file alot it is available easily. Because it mounts on your file system as another volume you can use any backup software you like, or use theirs. The files never reside on this companies servers - they are the bus, not the garage (the exception is if you rename a file, because of S3 they can DL the file, rename and reupload automatically, if you don't like this you can disable this feature).

I'm thinking about it for really critical stuff - pictures (because I trust recordable DVDs and CDs less than I trust a politician), bank statements, tax files, etc.

Any thoughts?

Looks legit enough. When I left Fannie they were just starting to implement WebDAV. It was definitely the fastest way for them to get things going, but maybe not the best. The protocol seemed a lot slower than it should be, but then again, we were using it on some huge file sets.

Yeah looks decent. WebDav is just some extensions to HTTP to make it easier to move/share files w/ permissions etc... So it shouldn't be that slow depending on the number of files you are moving and their size of course.
