2008 WRX Impressions

Post by Phibs »

Went to the old Paul Brothers dealership today to try and convince a friend to grab a WRX ( They have a really good deal on a new 07 WRX wagon ). I spot the 5 door WRX and while he test drives his I take that puppy out for a spin.

The only thing I can really compare to is my STI, so here goes:

The ride is VERY smooth and feels more like a traditional car. The transmission is a LOT smoother and more cushy than the STI. Acceleration was decent but definitely lacking ( This is why I have an STI ). I did not get to test the handling out too well, but it seemed to have a bit of body roll going on from what I could gather. The updated interior definitely gets my vote as the dials seem to be brighter and easier to see even in broad daylight which is a problem I have with the STI.

Under the hood is very clean and looks a lot nicer than previous generations. The hood dampers are a welcome addition to the line as well.

Ps. New cars SMELL BAD when they are first driven.

A commercial for the new one came on. This one was very much, "yay, let's be young and hip and play Mp3's in our car, yaaay!"

Do you all remember when the original GD commercials popped up, and it was about curve-straigtening performance? :(

I saw my first one in person yesterday. I was stopped at a light and a new blue sedan was turning towards me and he noticed and broke out into a smile. So he likes it. I'd still buy a used wagon though.

The NEW 2007 WRX wagon for $21,949 @ Herndon Stohlman seems like a good deal.

there's a black base model impreza hatch that i see in rosslyn every morning on my way to work. as luck would have it, we usually end up next to each other at a stoplight (3 times in the last 2 weeks or so). i just can't bring myself to give him the subie wave... i want to :picard: him. and the new wrx... no.

it's the same 5 speed that they've been using for a while now. I'm sure that the new WRX will make gobs of power with a TBE+EM but I can't get past the styling. I guess I'm shallow. :|

How does it compare to a Forester?

I don't remember how fast/slow my Forester was however it was certainly close to a stock STI ( As Doug can attest to ).

Yeah, I've been thinking I should swap in an auto to get the better gearing. It's rubbish what they say about them being slower. If you shift the automatic by hand, it is damn close to as fast as an STI.

three point something words: 4.44 final drive ratio. FXT's are giant killers from a roll.
