Now there's a car worth waiting for, although it won't appear in public until the Tokyo auto show. It will look somewhat different, with a more prominent hood scoop and a bigger grille to enhance airflow to the 300-hp turbocharged boxer-4, and prominent fender flares will accentuate the 18-inch wheels. The hardware underneath will be familiar, however, including Brembo brakes, a more aggressive suspension setup and a recalibrated all-wheel-drive system. Apparently it will not feature a dual-clutch sequential manual transmission with steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles. Aisin, one of the largest transmission manufacturers in Japan, is developing this technology for Subaru, but it won't appear until the 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX STI.

But my question is, is it still going to be a

hatchback?

Maybe on a stock tune that is more conservative...but if I get it tuned it would make a huge difference!!!!:twisted: But I wouldn't want the twinscroll off the standard WRX, I want it off the STi!!!!

Yes. It seems the only question now is how many doors? Seems that they will put out the 4door and might possibly release a 2 door version (not holding my breath)...but it will still only be a hatchback.

Interesting too:

From what we understand from our sources at Subaru, the same story will unfold for the U.S.-spec WRX fitted with a turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer-4 that comes from the U.S.-spec Legacy. As with the Japanese-edition car we drove at Tochigi, it will have modified intake ports and combustion chambers plus a new twin-scroll turbocharger. It's meant to produce better fuel economy and cleaner air emissions, so don't expect big power gains.

So the new WRX here in the states has a twinscroll?!?!

new STi is hatchback only. would you even want the new STi in '08 sedan form? the hatchback is less ugly, even if only a little.

The more I see of the new WRX the more it's growing on me.

This is a pretty nice form.

I also think the hatch is the better looking of the two.

The nose looks a bit too long compared to the shortened rear, and the front grille has to go, but I'm betting there will be plenty of aftermarket options for that.

This is also the first time that I think 18s might be the wheel size of choice.

Most people are complaining about the WRX. Subaru isn't making the WRX for the enthusiast anymore. They had talked about that a while back. The STi is their "high end" one. they seperated the gap between the two significantly more from what I've gathered. Wait for the STi's numbers to see what they have.

If they fix the body roll, add some more hp/tq, and fit it with the AU grill .. I'd be happy to have an STi.

I agree w/ the doctor. It doesn't look so bad. Kind of a mash-up between a Mazda 3, BMW 1 series hatch and possibly an A3.

...minus the Chrysler Town & Country grille of course.

well, subies are freakin' notorious for looking better in person. i think the 08 imprezas are going to follow suit. i also think that, like their 06-07 counterparts, they will look good in only certain colors**.

I have to say the only thing I did like about it was the hood scoop. The area has about 2x the opening but similar style as the LGT. Other than that it looked too big and too expensive to be a 'hot hatch'. And ugly to boot.
I'm sure we'll all develop an opinion of it as the weeks pass. For now I'm just gonna go cry in the corner.

ironic that the video begins with a commercial for the new Lancer. at least it did when I clicked. glad the car performs well. still not happy with the style, price or brakes.
