Bottom line: Apple and EMI just announced a joint venture to offer 256Kbps DRM-free AAC music from the iTunes store. The songs will be a $1.29 each and the service is set to start in May. You can also update current EMI songs for 30¢ each. However this deal does NOT included anything by The Beatles.
