I'm sure you're aware you could have a Lingenfelter C5 for that price. What's the attraction to the GTO (honest question; I looked at them before getting the 'ru)?

Nice cars! Those have a lot of potential, that is for sure! I can't believe they stopped producing the GTO :/

Good choice putting $4,000 rims on your 1990 Honda Civic. That's like Betty White going out and getting her tits done.

no buyers = no production. the one time in the past 25 years that Pontiac shows some styling restraint and they go too far, making the new GTO look like a bloated cavalier. damn shame too, the original GTO is a historic car for a reason.

I think it was a mistake to revive the GTO nameplate for this car. Too much history associated with the name. The car is great car - a nice modern interpretation of an American muscle car. But there's too much to live up to when you throw that name on the product.

That car is just another example of America's weird car market.

This thing should have been a winner right out of the gate.
It is a proven reliable platform (in Holden Monaro form), is a huge performance bargain and is well designed inside and out, with understated styling and is priced to move. This thing should have sold like hot cakes. Every former Camero/Firebird fan from 20 to 50 years of age should have been all over this car. I'm about as anti GM as it gets and I love this car!

Yet it bombed. Why? We can all guess, but no one knows.

my guess is Pontiac's usual customers were put off by the lack of plastic body molding. or maybe it was the small gas tank?

I guess I'm a lot more comfortable working on the car (found this out at the last meet). I would simply buy a C5 with front end damage. They're going for less than 20k with everything in order. A rebuilt LS1 and body work, plus $15-20k for the Lingenfelter goodness, and you are definitely in business for less than 40k. That's about my comfort level with a car that isn't an obscene expression of speed (or indeed a "vulgar display of power"). Used ones I have seen on eBay for less than 40. But not very often, there just aren't very many of them. It could also be said that there are twin turbo kits of the C4 and C5 for less than 15k. You could put together a C4 with TT for less than 30k, no problem at all. I personally like the C4, but I'm about three inches too tall for them. :(

bad experiences with front damaged cars would put me off that idea from the go.

:dons flame suit:

and I really don't understand why everyone says it doesn't deserve the GTO name, hell, the original GTO didn't deserve its name. Which means a race car built for the streets. This car did the same thing that the original GTO did, they took a car that looks like any other family car, and put a big motor in it... what is the difference... don't get me wrong my love for old school muscle is undying and the GTO is in the top 3, but, i just don't see what all the hate is about it.

Pesonally, Pontiac's mistake to me was $$$, but now these things new are being had for less than 28 OTD, and to me you can't beat that with a stick, and Avriette, there are already plenty of TT kits for this vehicle all south of 6k jumping power into 550-600whp range at a whooping 5-7psi

Also, next year pontiac is going to be releasing the Holden Commodore in G8 trim, and that thing is fairly nasty as well
