Stocker RE070 tires anyone?

I am pissed at my tires. Lots of STI/WRX people seem to think these RE070's are great tires, but I find when I'm pounding 4500rpm in 3rd around a turn, they slide on asphalt and concrete. There are wear marks up on the side wall, so they are definitely rolling. The tire pressure is correct. I don't have a pyrometer (but should probably invest in one), so I'm not sure which part of the tire is failing. But I am seriously thinking of buying a new set of tires, like the BFG g-Force T/A KD:

Or the KDW (which is supposed to have sipes for wetter weather)

Tire Rack reports this as "the best cornering tire they've ever tested", at 1.08g (that's better than a Caterham!). I think when we take the car in for its 6200 mile oil change, I'm going to put a set of Porterfield R4S's on the car, and possibly change out the tires.

The reason I put this in the for sale section, is I'm wondering if anyone would like a set of RE070s from a 2006 STI with about 6200 miles on them. They've got plenty of tread on them, although obviously the sides have been loved a little more than the middle.

I used to want a set of Yokohama A032R's, but it looks like they don't make em anymore. Anyways, anyone interested in a set of the OEM tires? I have no idea what to ask for them other than Tire Rack wants $185 for them (!!)....

I gotta get me another set of wheels so I can get some slicks on the car.

i'd prolly be interested, depending on how far out you would be selling them... i love the stockers.

What are you running you pressures at?
How may miles are on them?

have you looked at the Falken RT-615? Its a GREAT tire and I'll be buying a set the next time i need tires.

We're coming right up on 6,000 (2nd oil change). I don't know the exact pressure. I suspect somebody will have a gauge at tonight's meet. Schvin?

I actually wasn't that big a fan of the stock tires either. I put a set of Yoko Advan Neova AD07's on for this past summer and was VERY impressed with them.

Keep in mind that winter is coming, so you might want to invest in a good winter tire on the stock rims and then put something bigger and more agressive on next summer

i would have a gauge with me at all times, but it is in my glove compartment in my car at the dealer

i haven't yet found an air gauge in a zipcar =/

Mr Kleen has the KDWs and did not like them one bit at the autocross class. Not sure what he thought about them on the road. Betwqeen the springs and brakes and tires, not sure where his biggest complaint lies.

He should be at HT tonight.

There was an article written some months ago in Motor Trend (if I recall correctly) that compared several Max performance Summer tires. There were some clear traction champs:
- Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD07: was the top "DRY" traction tire. Mid-pack in wet.($200)
- Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212: trailed the Yokohama slightly in dry but was worse in wet. ($110)
- Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3: took top honors for comprimise between dry and wet. ($160)
- Continental ContiSportContact: placed above average in nearly every test called a very good "balanced" tire. ($150)
- BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW: trailed the Yokohama and Hankook slightly in dry, near dead last in wet ($160)
- Kumho ECSTA MX: Matched the BFGoodrich in dry, Dead Last in wet! ($100)

Didn't you watch Best Motoring's Drift Bible? Keiichi Tsuchiya recommends using summer tires in the winter to practice putting the car into unstable conditions, so you learn to recover. Since I don't want to be driving around in gravel pits (the other way to do this), I intend to do some spinning around on summer tires in icy parking lots.

I'll bring the DVD tonight. I have an extra copy for just this sort of occasion.

Netflix has em too.
