DHARAMSALA, India -- Across the border from Chinese-occupied Tibet, the tech infrastructure in this high mountain village is a mess.

But a former Silicon Valley dot-commer and members of the underground security group Cult of the Dead Cow are working with local Tibetan exiles to change that using recycled hardware, solar power, open-source software and nerd ingenuity.

yeah, about time the Tibetans got some good karma. makes me wish I could take some vacation time and help them install/maintain some stuff.

You would be surprised how many internet cafes there are in Tibet. With so many westerners going through there for the mountains and religious reasons, you can find it, but it is expensive. The Tibetans also have satelite TV from the west, and some oare pirating up and downlinks over them. You are hearing about this in Inda probably because there is no fear in reprisals that exist in Tibet, but there is same technology being implementd over the border as well.

Now that Inmarsat has deployed B-Gan coverage to asia and the US, we can get some rugged hardware to help. That just happens to be my new project for the state of Illinois.
