New Sun server: King of storage?

Post by Sabre »

Sun unveiled the Sun Fire x4500, known previously under 'Thumper' codename. Its compact dual Opteron rack server, 4U high, packed with 48 SATA-II drives. Yes, when standard for 4U server is four to eight harddisks, Thumper delivers forty eight HDDs with 24 TB of raw storage. And it will double within the year, when 1TB drives will be sold.

All I can say is WOW... They have PCI-X slots in the back too, so fibre channel is a possibility for SANs.

Good choice putting $4,000 rims on your 1990 Honda Civic. That's like Betty White going out and getting her tits done.

:lol2: They have 10 fans upfront of that beast. Looks like the drives go in vertically. You can check out their animation of it on the Sun web site. I really do like Sun servers. The more I worked on them and in Slowaris, the more I liked them. Slowaris is damn stable, but it is slow. Linux on the same servers screams.
