maybe some of you can relate

Post by Cereb Daithi »

so i needed WoW on my windows machine so i could install and run a model viewer to make a forum signature for a friend of mine... as most of you already know i am mainly a mac user... and foolishly i have gotten used to things that "just work"... boy did i get a re-education

as i soon found out a $1300 dell windows laptop that i bought pretty much just to run ventrilo just isnt very good at installing and running WoW... after a few hours i finally have gotten the game running and updating itself... good god do i hate windows.

here is what has happened thus far....

1)move mouse.. whoops it appears windows has gone past its "sleep mode" and has dipped into a coma.. hard reboot

2) sit through bootup... greeted by nice plesant OS X modded windows bootup... .thankful i dont have to listen to the overly cheerful and obnoxious windows bootup

3) insert disc 1... oh look autoplay isnt working as intended... explore disc... install....

4)install the game by going through its long tedious install procedures.. yes i know this directory does not exist.. i just typed the name in by hand. yes i want to choose where to install the program.. yes i want to install in the new directory.. no i will not be your friend (sigh do i miss the good ol' OS X drag and drop installs)

5) wait

6) insert disc 2...

7) wait

8 ) insert disc 3...

9) lets see what's on on demand... oh look...a history channel thing on blackbeard. could be good.

10) whoops... guess i shouldnt have gotten distracted.. well the show's over.... insert disc 4

11) damn i wish liz didnt still have my DVD install disc

12) yawn.... oh wow its done!

13) alright lets get these updates instal...... wait what? what do you mean cannot start up 3D acceleration... wtf windows!

14) lets see google.. directx directx dire...ah here we go....

15) ok miscrosoft i'll play your game.. ill download the validation software...

16) downloaded now to... huh? download validation software? wait i thought i just did.. what do you mean the plugin?...

17) install validation software... ok now im almost ready to begin downloading directx....

18 ) download directx... boy im getting alot of icons on my nice clean minimalistic desktop.... yeah windows.. thanks.

19) install directX.... ooh hey it worked..

20) boot up game.

21) what do you mean you cant start up 3D acceleration!!?

22) check video drivers... oh.. look at that... they dont exist on my comptuer

23) dell driver download page

24) lets see how stupid i can look turning my computer over looking for the product ID number.... hmm

25) download drivers... yay!

26) install drivers

27) found new hardware: plug and play monitor.... ok install

28 ) found new hardware: plug and play monitor... ok install

29) found new hardware: plug and play monitor.... damn i wish these drivers would hurry up and install

30) found new hardware: plug and play monitor.. cancel

31) what do you mean the new device was not set up properly...

32) found new hardware: plug and play monitor... OK....

33) found new hardware: plug and play monitor.... OH FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!

34) found new hardware: plug and play monitor.... it's not funny anymore Mr. Gates

35) found new hardware: plug and play monitor... "found new hardware... size 12 boot"

36) drivers successfully installed! do you want to reboot. oh god yes... anything to stop the pain.

37) reboot.. plesant sound.. not cheerful annoying...yaddayaddayadda etc.

38 ) found new hardware: microsoft mouse...ARGH STUPID MONITOR$@!*@&^@#&^$....oh..ok nvm... well at least its something new

39) boot up WoW..

40) something about hardware profiles being changed.. i didnt even read... i just clicked yes

41) EULA. cool... at leats now we are to this screen.. scroll down to bottom making the computer think i actually read it.... click accept.. cool

42) log in.... username Crevan... password ...... (yeah you wish you noobs)

43) downloading update... ok now kick me out of the game.... ah there we go

44) blizzard patch downloader.... *begin nap here*

45) ah.. 48% done downloading.... oh... what? im behind a firewall? why thank you for noticing... i wasnt aware.. and here i thought i was blissfully surfing the net and downlaoding everything in the world with less protection than a hooker wanting a child and obtaining more viruses and diseases than a peruvian whore..

46) omgomgomg its almost done.. is there a light at the end of the tunnel?

47) hardware changed. reload default settings?..... um what changed... sure yeah whatever do it.

48 ) EULA..Terms of Use...blahblahblah...login...

49) patch 1.11.1... softlock fix... ok i dont care...

50) EULA...Terms of USe... maybe i should read these sometime for entertainment... but not today

51) suggest realm.. oh look i've been assigned to Hyjal... how ironic..

52) hey wow it looks like im in the game!!!

53) finally... time to get the model viewer up and running!

part of the problem was trying to run WoW on a laptop. but Windows isn't always friendly either. I guess it's the price we pay for playing games released in the past 4 years and having more than 1 mouse button...

see THAT is my problem with microsoft. they arent a bad company persay... but they have no competition.. thefore no competetive drive... why should they spend excess cash and exercise excessive time and effort into a product that people will buy no matter what because in their minds there is no competition...

I wholeheartedly agree. If wasn't for the fact the fact that the vast majority of games a written for the Windows platform I'd be running a MAC or Linux box as my primary machine and tell Mr. Gates to go FSCK himself.

Pretty much, I boot into Windows if I know I'm going to play a game... which is mainly why I turn the computer on at home  If I know I'll just be surfing, I boot into FreeBSD :)

They are all Macs.

its just some of the tests my good friend at RIT has done on them... they're decent machines.. but they're still early in their life. the Mac Book Pros have been found to overheat badly in some cases for example. also now that they are on intel chipsets... you will start seeing many more viruses for macs. i'm going to buy a new intel mac soon enough.. but im just holding off a bit until they can fine tune them just a bit more

Common architecture != more virii. They've actually added more api's to the intel arch, so there's plenty for the "1337 h4xx0rz" to study up on.

To be perfectly honest I can't blame Jobs & co for dumping the IBM Power bits... The thermal efficiency (inefficiency) was getting absolutely stupid, worse than many Pentium IV's. That was the single biggest reason they never released a G5 laptop - too much heat. Also the same reason the last G5 towers were water cooled from the factory - too much heat.

Teh intel h/w was a good step in the right direction. I think the entire power series of machines (except for the G5) were way behind the times as far as technology and performance were concerned. I mean the powerbooks had a 133 or 166Mhz FSB!!!!! WTF?!? In 2005?

And as far as the overheating is concerned, that issue has been addressed with a new rev logic board. Mine doesn't overheat. And I abuse the procs...

And if you wanted to get picky we could talk about overheating, coolant leaks and such out of the G5's as well ;)

Are they perfect - NO. Are they better than the previous generation - YES.

And we mac users will still get our asses handed to us in the server market. :(

I'd like nothing more than for the Mac to enter the server market more agressively. Their XGrid is awesome. One of the LARGEST mistakes they made though was not putting hardware RAID on the Xserve (without an additional PCI card). I mean really, on a server, who doesn't mirror the OS drives?!?!?!

haha it's never short of incredible how strongly people int he computer industry will like or dislike any given brand of computer. i love macs but im just being a cautious slow person... i konw in time i'll come around and buy an intel mac ... but besides.... the PowerMac G5s are still running PPCs anyways
