Is This Even Available in the U.S.?!

Post by WRXWagon2112 »

Okay, this is has been bothering me for a few weeks now. The most recently posted issue of Car & Driver has a review of a new Ford vehicle: the 2006 Ford Futura Sprint GT/A wagon.

It's an odd looking wagon but I applaud them for taking a bold step (kinda fits in with their new marketing campaign, doesn't it?). I wanted to take a closer look at it so I went to the Ford website (http://www.fordvehicles.com). But get this ... it's not there.

Here's where it gets a little wierd. I recall hearing that Ford had a big lawsuit with PepBoys over the "Futura" name. Ford wanted to use it for a then-upcoming new car. PepBoys has been using the name on their line of house-brand tires for many years. PepBoys won, so Ford had to find a different name for their car (they ended up calling it the Fusion).

The Car & Driver article doesn't state whether this is a non-U.S. model (Ford got the rights to the "Futura" name in just about every other country). It also hints that this is a concept car, yet seems to treat it as a regular production model. So what's the deal?

The "Futura" name implies that it's a non-U.S. model, and yet nothing in the article says that it isn't availble in the U.S. Anyone have a better grasp on this?

Btw, I don't know why this is perplexing me so much, but our database has been down all day and this is just killing my brain cells.

if that's the one with the crazy interior and the exhaust that exits through the rear quarter panel, then it's a joke. the car is a styling exercise by Ford Australia, nothing more.

I see. But why don't they say that?! They talk about pricing and option packages, etc. Damn them!

I think that telling you it's a joke sort of ruins the joke.

I could be wrong.
