mystery solved! the nut that fixes the strut to the tophat wasn't near torqued down enough. the handling is better, but still not what I'd expected. I'm going to get an alignment, then I'll be able to really evaluate the setup.

where should I go for a good alignment in NoVA?

I had Don Beyer handle my alignment, they were able to get it to spec without using camber bolts... might be worth looking into if you want to stay local.
