April 20, 2006 Sony Drops PS2 Price By Patrick Klepek
Last week an analyst speculated to CNN Money that Sony would cut the price of PlayStation 2 amidst the continued push of Xbox 360 and the looming release of PlayStation 3. Sony Computer Entertainment America today confirmed the price drop; consumers can now pick up machines for $129.99.
Price drops aren't uncommon in the face of next-generation; parts are cheaper to manufacture and companies are desperate to continue expanding the market. "While we continue to innovate and design groundbreaking new products, we remain dedicated to our long-term vision for the PlayStation 2 platform," says SCEA president and CEO Kaz Hirai.
Though the change is effective immediately for consumers, SCEA won't start advertising the price drop until April 27th. In the announcement press release, the company cited The NPD Group numbers to state PlayStation 2 currently controls 55.6% of the market share in the console market.
I guess it depends on how expensive the ps3 is at launch (whenever that is) time. I mean Sony continued to seel the psone well after the release of the ps2, the gaming library is well established and they've got like 56% of the console market.... so yea, i could see ppl buying it.
that being said... i'm waaaaay too caught up in hl2 to even consider any other gaming system.

my early prediction is $599 with 1 controller and an additional charge for the HD. I also predict that I won't be buying one for some time.
I'd guess somewhere in the 500-700 range, but your price seems just about right. HD I think will be a part of it, but just like all of the consoles now'a'days, I'm sure there will only be one controller. Considering that it is a Blue-Ray DVD player as well, that's actually an awesome price. Hopefully by then, I'll have the HT totally done up!

Good choice putting $4,000 rims on your 1990 Honda Civic. That's like Betty White going out and getting her tits done.

the 360 doesn't come with the HD standard, you have to get the premium edition. I predict the same sort of pricing structure for the PS3.
Considering it's a blue ray DVD player too, I doubt they would leave out the HD component. That REALLY agrevates me that M$ did that... Not that I would buy a 360 anyway...
