yea, i've already got my disk partitioned and ready for the plunge. I just didn't want to make it seem like every nerd post I made was mac-centric. I'm honestly more interested about the work being done over on the Q project (offshoot of qemu proj) and then there's always the folks over at Darwine too.

Ahh the possibilities...

zOMG!!! Apple themselves have released a dual boot solution for WindowsXP. Now you can have the best of both worlds with a software solution provided by apple! Now that's pretty wild.

This one?
Half-Life 2 has finished installing and updating, and I only have one word for it:

Phenomenal.

At 1440x900 it's smooth as silk.
VERY good news indeed!

I decided (against my best judgement) to not finish the dd route and try Apple's built-in ASR method of making a disk image and a command line restore utility. If you're in front of a mac os 10.x installation, just do a man asr. Interesting enough... Not terribly certain why it exists next to dd, but what do I know. Long story short it does a SHIT LOAD of checksumming, etc and is a fantastic way to waste a few hours. I am going to attempt a restore of my lappy in the next 20 or so to see how well (if at all) this imaging process works. If it restores right, I'll be using the boot camp sw in about 30 mins. Might have an update by 0100, we'll see. Trust me, I wanna see what Doom3 runs like on this expensive thing on my desk as much as you do.

To be continued...

Kicking off teh restore now... Went from multiple partitions to a single partition (yea yea yea, shuddup - that's what bootcamp will work from) I'm willing to bet I don't have the patience to wait it out tonight. Hopefully I will have some sort of promising update tomorrow morning. We'll see.

Keep in mind that if you price together a similar Dell notebook you are neck and neck price wise. It's a (relatively) new processor, SATA HD, bla bla bla.. I mean the specs are pretty wild for a laptop.

Mine:
2.16 Intel Core Duo Proc
1GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300)
15.4-inch (diagonal), 1440 x 900 resolution
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM and dual-link DVI
100GB Serial ATA/100 7200RPM
DVD/R, Bluetooth, 802.11g, IR, etc, etc.
(most of the above are pretty bleeding edge)

Yea it's not the best bargain on the planet. But if it can run BOTH OSes fast as snot, keep me to (FINALLY!) one computer, look pretty and last 4 or more years then it was well worth it. But like I've said before, I'm pretty biased.

For me the advantages of having a single machine that can do both jobs well is reeeely important. Our apt looks like a computer yard sale with a few beds and a couch. Trimming down the inventory would be very cool. And simpler, which is what Apple is all about.

It's been claimed Mac OS X 10.5 - i.e. Leopard - will use processor virtualisation to run multiple x86 operating systems without the need to re-boot.
