Backblaze posts storage design, 1TB built for $117K

Post by complacent »

For the hardware geeks out there, this is pretty cool.

Much like the dc voltage-based design of teh google servers, Backblaze has gone ahead and shown how they are creating online storage on teh cheap.

Personally, I love seeing the working man's approach to most things in life. It often shows how things can be done well... and with a crapload less money.

They borrow a bit from A3, they borrow a bit from teh Google and they come out with something that has some serious merit. I dig it.

(it's also not lost on me that EMC charges the most per PB than everyone else in this article.)

VERY cool! The design reminds me of the Thumper (aka, Sun x4540). Their storage services seems to be VERY cheap as well!

they're also one of the few places that offer unlimited storage for your backups and you can generate your own private encryption key. dig!

That is the solution Anna has been using since April. She has had great results. We were using Mozy, but the restore process after her hard drive died was painful and now they charge per x GBs. I'll be switching when my contract runs out with Mozy.
My Name is Adam.
