2012 Porsche Cayman S Black Edition

2012 Porsche Cayman S Black Edition

Porsche has taken the wraps off of the 2012 Porsche Cayman S Black Edition, a downright sinister version of the already potent Cayman S coupe that boosts performance, adds several amenities and will actually save you money in the process.

The Cayman S is the third Porsche to receive the Black Edition treatment this year, and as with the darker editions of its 911 and Boxster S siblings, there’s a lot more to the Cayman S Black Edition than paint. True, it’s only available in one color. The body, wheels, brake calipers, twin exhaust tailpipes and entire interior—save for some aluminum and steel accents—are dark as night. Even the instrument dials have been blacked out.

But there’s plenty of light at the end of the tunnel. The Black Edition comes standard with the Design, Convenience and Infotainment packages that would normally set a Cayman S buyer back a pretty penny. That means your Cayman S Black Edition is equipped with bi-xenon headlights, touch-screen navigation, a Bose surround-sound system and more, all for $67,500 sticker. And we haven’t even discussed performance yet.

An Extra Boost of 10 Horsepower

Porsche gave the 3.4-liter 6-cylinder engine an extra 10 bhp, bringing the Cayman S Black Edition to 330 bhp at 7400 rpm, with 273 lb.-feet of torque. To help cope with that added power, the Black Edition has been fitted with the Boxster Spyder’s 19-inch wheels—the lightest that Porsche offers—wrapped in 235/35ZR-19 rubber at the front and 265/35ZR-19 in the rear. The result is an aggressive stance that makes the Cayman S Black Edition look particularly sinister.

The car comes with either a 6-speed manual or PDK 7-speed double-clutch transmission. Add the optional Sport Chrono Package with PDK and you’ll have launch control with Sport and Sport Plus shift settings. It’s enough to bring the Cayman S Black Edition to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds—two-tenths quicker than a Cayman S, but with identical fuel efficiency (20 city /29 highway mpg, or 19/26 with the manual 6-speed).

Act Fast, Limited Run

The 2012 Porsche Cayman S Black Edition will be limited to a run of 500, and it features Porsche crests embossed into the headrests and a limited-edition badge on the glove compartment. The darkness should spread to North America in July.
This is the Cayman for me...if I could afford it, that is.

The R is nice, not sure how much rougher a ride the suspension delivers vs. the black edition...same engine and wheels, though...just the R is not all black/dark and it weighs less. Both are sweet cars.

^^^ That will never happen. They don't want the (cheaper) Cayman beating the Cararra in any way shape or form.

That car is so balanced, I think AWD would actually just add weight... lol, shocking as this is coming from me!
