Intel completes McAfee acquisition

Post by Sabre »

PC World
Intel has completed its $US7.68 billion acquisition of security vendor McAfee, the chip maker announced on Monday.

The all-cash deal makes Intel a security industry powerhouse, giving it a broad range of consumer and enterprise security products. Though the acquisition has left some observers scratching their heads, Intel says it needs the McAfee technology to help it bake security into its microprocessors and chipsets -- especially as Intel looks to become more competitive in smartphones and other portable devices.
My first thought was "Wow, this sucks... look how the Oracle/Sun merger ended up"... then I remembered that McAfee doesn't really have anything that I care about :rolllaugh:

How long before we see some crazy virus scanner infested processor?

Intel only wants to sell chips, just like Google only wants to sell advertising. They wouldn't buy McAfee if they didn't have a plan to sell more chips.

umm, they're already far down the road on a secure chip architecture. I look at the McAfee acquisition as adding to that capability.

Let's hope we can turn that shit off. First they started with the unique ID on the chips (which you can turn off) and now this...
