However unlike the PSPgo, the PSP2 will likely feature a UMD optical drive--and not be a download-only device--according to a related statement by PlayStation CEO Kazuo Hirai. A report released back in May also said that the device was "****ing powerful," that it was based on a four-core Cell CPU. There's also talk that it will have two cameras--one forward and one backward facing--and a possible 3G connection.

Originally it was believed that the PSP2 would launch in Q4 2010. However since the device didn't make an appearance at E3 2010, it's believed that the PSP2 will launch in 2011--somewhere in the same timeframe as Nintendo's North American 3DS launch (which debuts in Japan in November).

The original PSP launched in North America on March 24, 2005. Could the PSP2 see a possible March (2011) release too?
I've been thinking about picking up a portable game system for flights and long car rides... I'm really torn between the new 3DS and this...

a four-core cell?!?

does it come with a generator? i know how thirsty the ps3 is, i can only imagine what this little bastard is going to require to bake your nards while flying.

I'm sure it's shrunk since the PS3 came out.
(uses a lot less power).

Keep in mind, that could mean :

1) 4 complete cell processors (1x ARM, Nx slave) << Possible, at some low clock and good die shrink
2) 1 complete cell processor (1x ARM, 4x slave) << Extremely possible. Not even difficult, especially with a die shrink

Edit : Oops. It was PowerPC not ARM. (I remembered that it was old-apple related)

(you keep bringing logic into threads where i attempt to bring comedic relief. attempt.)

Ya, I'm thinking like this: A PS3 cell processor (a "full" one) is "one 3.2 GHz PowerPC-based "Power Processing Element" (PPE) and eight Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs)." I'm guess the PSP2 version will be a PPC CPU and 4 SPE's.

Still going to be a hungry little sucker. With LiIon batteries though, this might not be too big a deal.

It's been 4 years since PS3 release. That's an eternity in computing-land.

Hell, the video card is par with a desktop 6000 series nvidia card.
That's so slow compared to what's out these days, it's tragic.
Just take a 50% speed bump per series (general average in video cards).
6000->7000->8000->9000->200->400
That's 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 = 7.5 x faster graphics today than when PS3 came out.

So extrapolate that kind of growth to the CPU (albeit I bet they haven't pushed cell progress this fast).
If the PSP2 CPU is par with the PS3 CPU, then it's only 1/8 of what they could have thrown in there today.
And if it's weaker than the PS3 CPU, then it's even less of what they could have thrown in there today.

I'm going with the 3DS, hopefully before 2011. I need a new toy or I'm gonna buy an iPad v1. probably the day before v2 is announced.
