Cellulose isn’t new – it’s been around as long as woody plants have – and aerogels aren’t either. But when researchers recently combined the two, they created something wholly new: a flexible, lightweight, super-absorbent sponge that can also be crushed down into a flat piece of magnetic “nanopaper” capable of supporting 400,000 pounds per square inch.

...

By marinating the cellulose in iron sulfate and cobalt chloride, the researchers were able to infuse their aerogel with some of the properties of those metals as nanoparticles were absorbed into the fibers, imparting magnetism among other characteristics.
Very cool stuff.

This thing ain't no insulator now. Maybe at cold temperatures the voids will insulate, but the ionic metals are going to conduct.

I bet funny things happen to this at ~400 degrees.

This sort of underlines why I stopped subscribing to PopSci. USA Today headline grabs, but none of the content. Case in point; how the hell can this stuff alternately support 400,000 lbs/in2 but be hammered flat? WTF kind of hammer are they using?

Not taking anythign away from the material or developers. Just the editor.

its written at a 4th grade level. seriously.

as for insulator....you're right...it depends on the type of aerogel. The silica based one can do this:

Now you can print your own graphene aerogel.
Ink jet printers, UNITE!

Man, I think this would be a great camping pad. Light weight, pliable, insulating, and waterproof.

Ski jackets and other things I can see them using this in!
