It's only speculation at this point, but Subaru has said it will bring a "sporty SUV," and the Sydney Morning Herald figures an additionally boosted Forester makes the most sense.
Regardless of whether such a beast would wear an STI badge – if it exists at all – the theory goes that it would get an STI-like jump in power above the turbocharged Forester currently on sale in Australia. The JDM version of the Forester STI, on sale for five years, puts down 322 horsepower – that's 26 more ponies than are available in the Aussie WRX STI.
The Forester is already the top-selling compact SUV in Australia. Right now the most powerful version is the 227-hp XT model, so a boost in gumption would place it incontestably above the 268-hp Toyota RAV4 and 235-hp Mazda CX-7. Subaru won't confirm anything else about what will be revealed, except that it could go worldwide.
I've given up hope on a turbo Toyobaru coupe. Will Subaru North America break my heart a second time?
I've been thinking more and more, I'm glad that I didn't want (autobox)/wasn't in a position to buy a turbo, because more power on the stock chassis would be disasterous for me, and I don't want to sacrifice ride height, at this time,
After the recently unveiling of the Forester XT-S concept for Australia, Subaru has just announced a sporty new Forester model for Japan. Called the Forester tS, it’s inspired by the STI and follows after the Legacy tS model with plenty of upgrades to provide a more dynamic driving experience.
Included are STI shocks and springs, plus added bracing and a flexible strut bar among other add-ons. Inside, there are highly-bolstered STI seats with red stitching with aluminum pedals, an STI-style steering wheel with paddle shifters and a big red push-button ignition.
Power comes from the 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer 4-cylinder with 263-hp and the new 5-speed automatic transmission.
The new crossover will be offered in Obsidian Black, Pearl White, Stylish Silver and WR Blue Mica. Sadly it will only be offered in Japan, and even for enthusiasts there it will be a rare beast with just 300 versions of the limited edition model set to be produced.
Japan only I would take this model...even if it was only with a AT.

We stopped by Don Beyer Subaru to get the oil changed in the GF's Forrester on Friday. The SPT parts catalog in the show room has a picture of the Forrester FXTi concept on the cover.
