can anyone give me a good mod to start off with?2005 sti
price range is 300$

For $300? Hmmm ... perhaps an axle-back? Or maybe a downpipe?

If you're looking for good "bang-for-the-buck" mods, I'd start with a turbo-back exhaust - though that can run around ~$1,000 for new systems.

Maybe one of our STi owners can chime in ...

dude, trust me it will be the greatest mod ever!!!! if you are looking for a go fast mod, at that price, i would say intake, and save the rest. Or maybe a used cat back.

Welcome to DCAWD! The best mod for you at that price point is going to be a downpipe, no question. An intake could make you run lean without proper tuning. Probably the only exception to this is the Perrin BigMAF.

You will notice immediate gains with the downpipe. After that, save up for engine management, like the UTEC or a Cobb Access Port. That will let you take full advantage of any future mods that you do.

ok....I like the cobb accessport...but what is the difference between that and the utec? the prices are higher on the utec why?

What kind of power gains can i expect if I install and intake and cobb accessport?

The Cobb accessport comes with off the self MAPS. Cobb claims most aftermarket intakes will make zero gains on it, even their own.

The one exception might be the K&N Typhoon intake wich has shown to net 13 whp and 10 ftlbs just by bolting it on with NO tuning. I was there, I saw it! However, it costs $260! A downpipe will net you more for potentialy less money.

Now, as far as which to go with you have a miriad of choices:
Do you want to run catless? or do you want at least 1 hi-flow cat.
If you're going to run catless, grab anything you want that will bolt-up to your cat-back. I have yet to see any catless downpipes that I felt were crap (even the cheap e-bay stuff). If you want to run with a cat my personal fav is the Helix catted for $399.

There is no easy way to decsribe the differences between the UTEC and the Accessport. There was a discussion on this not too long ago in this forum. Or you can call a vendor who sells both and try to get them to talk you through it.

simple answer: UTEC is for the l33t hax0rs who want to constantly tinker with their tuning, whereas the AP is more of a set-and-forget type of EM. I have an AP and I've been very happy with it but I'm not going for big power in my WRX.

But I deffinately agree, downpipe is a must!

Get a DP

DP is a little easier to install than the UP (in my experience). just take your time and schedule all day to do it. there are lots of guides online to help with the project. I wouldn't try it until the weather warms up if you don't have access to a garage.

DP is a HECK OF A LOT easier than an uppipe.

what about a MBC, s-afc and logger. mbc is about $80, used s-afc about $100 and logger about $200. that puts you $100 over, but the logger is well worth the investment for now

As he's just getting into modding the STI, he probably didn't want to go right in to tuning his own AFR's and such. Looks like he ordered a TBE and a Cobb Access Port. He'll definitely see big gains with that
