Verizon says No iPhone4

So,
Verizon has a big meeting Sunday.
Two topics are supposed to be brought up:
They're dropping "wireless" from their name.
They are
not interested in the iPhone4.
Wonder what this means for the rumors surrounding a CDMA device this xmas? Sprint?
hrmph.
EDIT: Got my dates wrong. Oops.

they're still going to be referred to as verizon wireless internally (so we at verizon business and the folks at verizon telecom can distance ourselves from their sleazy upper management).

Thanks to Mike M for
this link on the WSJ
Verizon Wireless has been beefing up its network and believes it will have no problem handling iPhone-type loads, a claim that could be put to the test this year if the carrier signs up millions of subscribers using the Apple Inc. device.
Verizon Wireless, the country's largest wireless carrier, is confident enough in its network that it will offer unlimited data-use plans when it starts selling the iPhone around the end of this month, a person familiar with the matter said. Such plans would provide a key means of distinguishing its service from rival AT&T Inc., which limits how much Internet data such as videos and photos its customers may use each month.
AT&T has struggled to overcome complaints about network quality ever since it started exclusively selling the iPhone in the U.S. in 2007. That contributed to a decision last summer to offer new iPhone and other smartphone customers only pricing plans that cap how much data they send and receive..
The move was aimed in part at gaining a measure of control over heavy iPhone users, who have overtaxed the carrier's network, leading to complaints about dropped calls and spotty service.
It wasn't clear how long Verizon would offer unlimited-data plans. Its executives have said repeatedly that the industry needs to move to some form of tiered pricing—charging different prices for different amounts of data use—as mobile Internet service use rises, but for the moment the carrier is sticking to its existing plans.
Verizon Wireless, majority-owned by Verizon Communications Inc., has a lot at stake as it starts to carry the iPhone, which it will announce Tuesday at an event in New York City, people familiar with the matter say. Verizon more than any other U.S. carrier has built its reputation on its network quality, and any stumble in handling iPhone traffic will call into question Verizon's major selling point. On the other hand, if it does handle the iPhone well, then AT&T will have a harder time arguing it didn't mismanage its own network.

Interestingly enough... it looks like they disabled (it's redirected) searches for iphone on their (verizons) website... suspicious... something tells me this will be reversed shortly...
Since they already sell the iPad... It just makes sense they would well this.

My one concern is how VZW will neuter it like they do all handsets. The VZ OS SUCKS. There's a reason people buy blackberries and iphones and its not VZ's interface.
Example: disabled "USB Mass Storage" so you can't connect the phone like a USB drive and drag/drop. I have 1000 CD's ripped (legally, from my own collection). If you think I'm paying (again) for music, try again VZW.

Yep, it's here...
Some interesting Q's:
Do I need to sign up for a 2 year agreement?
When purchasing iPhone at the 2 year promotional price a new agreement is required. However, you will also have the option to purchase iPhone at full retail price, which will not require you to sign a long-term agreement.
Are there minimum service and data pricing requirements?
Yes, iPhone customers will need to choose from any of the current Nationwide plans. Customers will also be required to activate a data package, pricing will be announced at a later date.
I currently have an iPhone with AT&T. Can I keep my existing version of iPhone?
No, in order to take advantage of the nation’s largest and most reliable wireless network, you will need an iPhone 4 that works on the Verizon Wireless network.
When can I purchase iPhone?
iPhone 4 will be available for pre-order to Verizon Wireless customers only, on a “first come, first serve” basis via VerizonWireless.com, on or around February 3rd 2011 – details to be confirmed a week prior by Verizon Wireless. New and existing customers can purchase in select channels on February 10th 2011.
Will I be able to sync content and iOS apps that I already have in iTunes to my new iPhone 4?
Yes.
Will any Verizon Wireless apps be available on iPhone?
iPhone will have the 3G Mobile Hotspot app pre-installed, and it will also have other popular apps available in the market such as VZ Navigator, and V CAST Media Manager.
Sadly, I don't see anything about how much the data plans will cost. Here are the voice/txt plans:
Unlimited Text, Picture, Video & Instant Messaging
Unlimited calling to more than 80 million Verizon Wireless customers.
Unlimited Night & Weekend Minutes
No Domestic Long Distance Charges
Data sent or received is $1.99/MB (unless data package selected or required).
Nationwide 450
$59.99/monthly access
Nationwide 900
Unlimited calling to and from any 5 numbers on any network in America, when you select a Nationwide Plan of 900 Anytime Minutes.
$79.99/monthly access
Nationwide Unlimited
$89.99/monthly access

Besides seeing "Verizon" next to the iPhone 4's signal-strength meter, there isn't much obvious sign of Verizon on this device. The demonstration phones made available to the media here had no Verizon applications added - a distinct difference from how Verizon has packaged its software on some Android phones.
good news, indeed. That said, I'd encourage anybody looking to wait until the june rollout of any new iPhone model. Otherwise, you'll be out of sync on contract dates.

i'm trying to figure out why so many people are hating on the verizon iphone.
i mean, what did people expect? apple did the exact same thing with at&t. at&t had an existing 3g network when the original iphone was released. matter of fact, there were already 3g devices for sale on at&t's network when the original iphone was released.
and breaking apple's release cycle (summertime new models) to make a verizon version is very telling. for example, why are the phones physically different? why are the buttons moved around and the antenna moved around? that tells me that apple didn't get the chance to work on a verizon version until
after the at&t version was finished and shipping. and if that is the situation -
what the hell kind of super-phone did people expect with less than six months from development to shipping?
i think this phone was rushed. i think apple and verizon got a product out the door
as soon as they were legally allowed to.
"but, it's only
as good as the at&t version!" *sobs*
yea? and? isn't that what you wanted?
nevermind the fact that verizon's "4g" network is
completely untested... why the

would apple want to base a product solely on an untested network? because they wanted to sell a phone with
less coverage than at&t? come on!
(apparently this is my surly week. sorry for the continued rants. )

I'm not hating....I want one. I'm not due until June for work or home. I can make the case for either now but I'd like to see what the next gen from Apple brings. i.e., I have a 1st gen hacked iPhone sitting here as an iPod so I can be patient

oh i wasn't picking out anyone here. i was speaking primarily to what i've read online and in twitter streams, etc. and of course teh ot.
i'm curious to see what they announce this summer. but i'm also not making a move any time soon. i just don't understand how people were gagging for exactly this situation and now aren't happy.
*shrug*
