Android 2.2 -> Warp speed :)

The guys over at Android Police have Froyo running on a Nexus One and boy, is it a bump in speed over Android 2.1. The lads played around with it and ran some tests using Linpack, which tests the performance of Android's Dalvik VM, the brains of Android. According to their results, while a HTC Hero (Android 1.6) scored about 2 MFLOPs and their Nexus One running 2.1 clocked between 6.5 and 7 MFLOPs, Android 2.2, or Froyo, rang in at 37.5. Yowza!
That's a pretty nice little upgrade!

Two quick thoughts, please correct me if I'm wrong... but that score is heavily dependent upon using JIT, right?
And the advantages of the JIT compiler are only for interpreted code that has to be compiled and run in a software environment (Java, Flash, etc), right?
So, it's faster... but only for certain types of apps/languages/etc and not across the board.
I just don't want people thinking "OMG fastAr than everything!!1"

Can't wait! Speed has been my number one complaint.

I saw an openGL es demo on 2.2.
Guy had source code, android simulator, nexus one, ide, etc.
Showed us how app development is done, how it runs on both sim and phone, generally what to do to develop 3D applications for android.
It was, how you say : problematic.
Some stability issues with the phone. And you have two layers of opengl on that device. A basic sort of semi interpreted mode, and a full up mode where you have to extend the OS' draw functions with native code.
Generally the 3D speed was 'ok' considering it's a phone, but nothing you could call quick.
One thing I really like about windows ce is that you can almost run a regular windows app. Only a some tweaks (and obvious UI changes due to the interface).

Same reason a lot of developers like the XBox series.... they can pretty much just modify their PC code slightly and it works on the XBox. I've heard that the PS3 is a beast to develop on. I'm REALLY hoping that the PS4 is a PS3 with more Cell processors. That would make developers lives much easier since they'll already know the platform.

Google officially revealed Android 2.2 "Froyo" Thursday at Google I/O. Most of what we've learned about the OS update was made official: 2x to 5x more speed than the recently-released 2.1 update thanks to the Just-in Time (JIT) Compilation, USB tethering, Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities, and a 2x to 3x speed boost in JavaScript for faster mobile browsing (and is apparently faster than Eclair and iPhone).
The company also revealed that it's incorporating twenty new Enterprise features into Froyo including APIs for device management, global address book integration, and auto discovery. Google has also inserted an application data backup API that allows users to back up apps and the personal information contained within. Froyo will also be Microsoft Exchange friendly, and even allow for "pushed" information from other devices.
Of course, it wouldn't be a big Froyo reveal without a sniper shot aimed towards Apple. "It turns out that on the Internet, people use Flash," Google said. "Part of being open means you’re inclusive rather than exclusive." Froyo's native support for Flash 10.1 is probably the update's biggest selling point, allowing mobile web surfers to view Flash-based content without the need for 3rd-party apps (save for Adobe's Flash 10.1 player, of course).
As for other features, Froyo will allows users use voice commands to translate words and sentences, make calls, and even browse for complicated content. The Android Market will also receive a hefty upgrade, finally providing a means for users to download and install apps on the SD card (can we say w00t!). Apps can also be updated automatically, and they can also be purchased via the PC version of Market and pushed OTA to the phone.

Wow, VERY cool

The pushing to the phone is a very nice feature... I just hope they secured it well

I am very interested in seeing 2.2 running on a device in the wild, not a review unit. I'll believe in the features when they're released to the public. I'm very hopeful though.

Do you have any reason to doubt they'd come out? I mean aside from tethering, which Verizon will likely axe, Google has always provided the features they say they would.

Of course not... I'm merely concerned about how well these yet to be released features actually function in the wild.
