that is the list of parts for the hybrid buid from IAG. Carmax wanted to give me $4000 for the car. No way I am doing that. The dealership where I bought the car offered $7500 if I jump into a fully loaded mazda3 hatch.

What's the cost to rebuilt your 2.0 shortblock?

Re: I think my engine is done

Posted: Mon Mar 29, 2010 5:06 pm
by zaxrex
swapping in a used engine would be cheaper at least $2700 while rebuilding with stock parts would be near $4000. Upgrading would be that plus parts costs. Rebuilding to stock has most of the same labor as building up the engine, just less expensive parts

Do I really need a AP and Oil cooler?

Are you doing a complete longblock or just a shortblock?

Either way, you will need significant tuning from the first turn of the key. If you don't do an AP you will need some sort of engine management. An oil cooler is cheap insurance and (IIRC) is stock on teh STi. I would assume with an STi block you would have to purchase the 2.5L oil cooler and not the 2.0L cooler, though I'm unsure of the operating oil temps of a hybrid motor.

^elleventy billion Do NOT spend all this money and not get a custom tune. There is no off the shelf AP map that will fit for a hybrid engine (that I know of). Either get a Pro Tune (if you want the AP), get an Open Source tune or replace the computer with something else.

there is a protuning session with Jorge at IAG. They are charging over $600 for the AP...

IAG Told me they only tune with an AP...my thoughts on the AP was that it was good if you ran multiple maps. I don't think I will be doing so. DPS is sending me a quote too

DPS's quote is much better. They do open source tuning and they would be using a EJ257 bare block and using CP forged pistons. I am just waiting for a more detailed qoute

my brain hurts from the increasing knowledge of building up a 2.0l :rolllaugh:

I also talked to Agile and they suggest against the hybrid due to high compression ratio which will lead to detonation and hot spots and a short life...unless the head is milled to keep the stock CR. I have to confirm with DPS if they do this. Agile suggests going a 2.1 stroker w/ forged pistons. Close to the same price, but more reliable.

I also called EFI logics to comfirm the high CR and they say they get the block milled. They charge $700 for this.

hmmm...lots to think about.

Milling the head, or milling the block? I can see the work on the top to increase head space, but not sure how you would remove material from the deck and lower the compression. Did they happen to explain how they would do that?

I feel your pain. I almost bought a 06 WRX and did SERIOUS research into the EJ engine series. I came the conclusion the EJ25 has issues that I didn't want to deal with. The EJ20 has serious issues with low end torque though. I think that's because the intake ports are huge relative to the motor size. Hence my evil plan of bolting EJ255 with their small ports onto a EJ20 shortblock.

However, after doing all this research I determined this was not a can of worms I wanted to open and never bought the WRX.

:plusone:

I've seen people use thicker head gaskets or spacers to accomplish the same thing.

that would be milling of the head. There will be much detonation if the high CR is not ironed out, but the only people I see having problems are those who are running a stock wrx turbo or VF series.
