Good point!

I really like the idea of the STI swap since I get the extra power yet there is room to grow. I believe the swap is pretty straight forward.

how about ABS? You'll probably want that to work too.

does this swap include the rear differential? or the brakes? what bolt pattern hubs will you need? will the knuckles match the mounts of your suspension?

any compatibility issues with the instrument cluster?



Trust me, there are a TON of issues to consider, and an equally substantial set of costs to go with it. If you do this, you will have to expend more effort and time than you can fathom right now. If you're seriously considering swapping, I HIGHLY recommend speaking to someone who has owned a swapped subaru. There are many lessons to be learned. You may also want to do some reading up in the Subaru Conversions section of NASIOC.

Replacing my 700R4 automatic with a T-5 manual is straightforward. Replacing a 305 with a 350 is straight forward. Fully STI swap...not so much. I watched a group of guys do a full 08 STI swap into a bugeye, and it one point they had the car pretty much completely stripped of everything. Suspension, trans, engine, interior, wiring, EVERYTHING!

Personally, if I were doing this I'd look for a reasonably priced stock 2.5 shortblock and bolt my 2.0 heads onto it. Throw a 16G or similarly sized reasonable turbo and tune it to about 300 BHP.

Well, actually if I were doing this I'd get a 2.0 shortblock and 2.5 WRX heads to try and make a torquey 2.0 to get fuel economy and power, but I'm a freak. My engine plans are always a bit unconventional. :P

I have to voice my concerns about where you are headed.
If you really want a 2.5, a hybrid build is what you will need to do.
There is so much involved with a true STi swap (engine, ECU, wiring, drivetrain, tuning) that thousands of message boards can't hold it all.
It's not easy and it's NOT cheap. If it was, there would be tons of them rolling around, and there just aren't. And many of the ones that are, are just projects and money pits.

Even the 255 or 257 hybrid is not just a swap and go. The heads and block need to have special spacers so that the compression isn't too high, or the heads have to have some work done to avoid using spacers. There are a couple of threads on NAS*** on this very subject. It also requires some specific tuning to make the hybrid run properly. This has been done quite a bit and there is a lot of info available.

The trany issue is a completely different story. You would be a fool to start looking into a new clutch/trany package while the original is still in good working order. It's easy to see it as a "do it all in one shot" exercise, but that's just another $6,000 that your throwing at a problem that doesn't exist. Unless you are planning to do a great deal of track time it just isn't worth the price. And many will argue that even if the trany does fail a built gear box is the way to go.

My ej205 with a TD05-18G 8cm is running about 320whp / 295lb/ft. There is not a stock turbo STi that I can't match. I take it easy on launches, watch my shifts and keep the maintenance up and I have had zero issues with it.

Put some serious SERIOUS thought into this before you start down a path that may cost you significant time, money and pain.

trans only has 82k on it, so I will just leave it be. As far as performance...if I am going to have to spend a chunk of change I might as well get my money's worth. :mrgreen: I think a 68HTA of 18G on a hybrid would be a beast, but a 16g on a a 2.0 with new block will be be just as nice.

If you have the luxury of having alternate transportation, then there is nothing wrong with re-building the stock one. But with a separate shortblock, you will have found any gothcas or other problems that may be hiding in the stock one.

went to my local garage guy and he says the sound is a rod. Since it is not constant it may be a slipped bearing. I am at peace now :rolllaugh: Let's build this Saabaru :nana:

I have been talking with Rick at IAG about the hybrid build. I should have a quote soon for the following:

EJ57 shortblock (stock)
Larger injectors(650cc)
EVO III turbo
STI TMIC(may be pushing its limits)
New Clutch(stage 1 recommend)
Tune

*timing belt, oil pump, 06+ oil pan, Walboro 255, and some more stuffies.

Switch to something like this and you'll be fine :)
