My Laptop has issues

The other day I was just listening to music on it and it shut off. It was plugged in. I tried to reboot but went to a black screen. I let it sit for a weekend then tried again. It loaded and said it had missing or corrupted files. I read that vista has issues with partitioned drives. I let it do its thing and the comp only stays on for about 30 min them shuts off. Could the hard drive be over heating? Any suggestions or can anyone take a swing at it.

I doubt the HD is overheating, but the processor might be. How hot is the bottom? Is the power brick working? Does it get too hot?

Also check your event viewer for entries that appear right before a shutdown... it will probably help you determine what is going wrong. without specific error codes we're kinda just fishing here.

I say sit he laptop on a barstool, walk around it clockwise while spinning counter-clockwise and singing "you spin me right round baby right round". No, that won't fix your problem but it will be entertaining to watch.

I am not getting any error codes. The battery hold no charge any more. The comp is about 1 1/2 HP pavilion. It is not hot hot, but its pretty warm.

Check the fan. A lot of times they get clogged up with hair and dirt which will cause them to seize...and you know the rest.
Could be one of many issues, though. Very hard to say without looking at it.

If there is a problem with something related to power you will see ACPI, APM, APIC, etc warning or error events written to the system event log. If you're unable to keep the machine up long enough to crawl the logs, I suggest removing the drive (provided you're not using bitlocker), connecting it to another machine via an adapter and peruse the event log from another computer. If it is a hardware issue you might also have luck with a manufacturer's diagnostic CD (witch can most likely be downloaded from their website).
Sudden, unexpected shutdowns can be almost anything from driver issues to software issues to hardware issues to virus/malware issues. Johnny 5 need more input.

The fact that it kept cutting off various times in DOS when you brought it to the meet means it is no OS.
Did you get your RAM chip to check out?
Tell me what kind you need and I might be able to "borrow" one from work.

Grab
this CD image, burn it somewhere and boot from it on your laptop. That CD has Memtest86 on it which should test your RAM. It will let us know if it is a hardware issue or a software issue.

Did you burn the file to the CD or did you use something that will image the ISO to the CD? Sounds like the CD was burned incorrectly.

you probably just burned a copy of the iso to the disk. you need to use Nero to OPEN the disk image (ISO) and burn THAT. if you aren't familiar with ISO files
there's someone who can help.

seems there is an issue with vista and partitions...is anyone able to burn a copy of vista recovery cd and vista partition recovery and bring it to the meet?

From what was happening when you brought it to the last meet, your partitions had nothing to do with it. It was restarting in DOS, didn't even get to Vista anything. Vista may have issues with some partition setups (mine doesn't), but would not cut your machine off while looking at BIOS settings and such.
At this point, you should start thinking of docking your HDD on another computer to copy off the files that you want... OS restore and partition dohickery could spell death for data.
