This has happened twice in the past 6 months. It occurs when I am leaving work. It is about 1/4mile of15-25mph roads and them smoke starts coming from the hood scoop. I pull over, open the hood and the smoke is coming from directly under the turbo. No smoke from the exhaust or anywhere else. So, I drive the 5 or so miles more and it stops. When I get home there is no more smoke(additional 10 miles) Any Ideas?

More than likely one of the oil lines (inlet on top of the turbo, exit on the bottom) is leaking a little. You should be able to see the residue. The outlet on the bottom is only held on by a pinch clamp.... which is very weak if taken off. Anyway, it's probably one of those two. It should be easy to fix!

Also, there's a small chance that there's a leaky coolant line also/instead of. Though that would be more consistent smoking.

Does the smoke have an odor?
If it is sweet (like maple syrup) it's coolant.
If it is acrid and burns your eyes it's oil.

What was the result of the checkup? Healthy car now?

oil is spraying onto the underside of the turbo. Happened to me on Thursday again. It smokes for for about 2-3 min then stops.

Yep, it's that stupid wire clamp then. I hate to tell you this, but it's a BITCH. You'll want to put a hose clamp on both ends of it to make sure the sucker stays on ok. Basically, this means removing the turbo.

He's dead on. If you can stand a little smoke I would let this go until you HAVE to take the turbo off. Yes, you'll burn a little oil, but I wouldn't do the 4+ hours worth of work for just that.

well I have to take the DP and UP off soon would that give enough room?

That's about half of it... Getting the turbo and turbo inlet pipe off is the other part and that is not easy. It's not unusual for it to take 4-5 hours for a turbo swap. You have to take the turbo off in order to get to both sides of the hose.

I would definitely try to do the DP/UP and fix the turbo at the same time, just plan to be in the shop for 8 hours if everything goes smoothly.

All it takes is one stubborn uppipe stud or a ripped coolant line and your downtime just tripled.

The only reason I take my turbo off is to swap it. Other than that, it stays on!

I have a brand new TD05 18G that I am not using. Would be great for your ride

If I had the 2.5L but I think the 18g would be a little much for a DD...could be wrong

Actually, it is a great turbo for the 2.0L and it is like a VF39/34 but holds the power better on the top end. More similar to the new VF48. I just didn't use it b/c my schedule never matched up w/ a tuner's schedule, so the AP had a plugnplay VF43 map that I went with. The TD05 is a better turbo than the VF43 but it is already installed so I am just running w/ it. The TD05 is also a more efficient turbo. I actually finally got our schedules to workout so I am getting a protune on Saturday from Jorge ...it has only been ~2yrs in the works.

The TD05-18G is a 40 lb/min turbo with a larger exhaust housing than the 35 lb/min vf43. It will spool slightly slower than a vf series turbo (about 200 RPMs or so) but will push higher boost levels through a longer rev cycle.

I am currently running an 8cm TD05-18G on my 02 Wagon at 20psi for 310 whp / 290 lb/ft.
To get the most out of the 18G you will need some fuel upgrades. Ideally you would want them for any turbo upgrade on the 2.0 as the injectors and fuel-pump just don't push enough fuel.

Just a note, it is the TD05-18G 7cm^2 model so spool will be slightly faster than the 8cm^2 model...better suited for the 2.0L motor.
