glad i got an 09! that thing looks bulbous. i'll never understand the trend among the auto industry of taking a good thing and making it unnecessarily bigger. wider and longer. still, only an additional 50 pounds over the 09. i'd be afraid to drive it in any sort of urban area.

(jealous of the 6 speed manual on the new gt though)

looks sort of like the G37's fat cousin... :?

It's definitely loosing some of it's character... The power increase is nice though. I'd like to drive one of the CVT's. The last one (Honda) that I drove was terrible!

I kind of... like it.

It does reek of Maxima though, so I can see the complaints.

But for a sedan, it's not so bad.

Well, at least the pictures shows the right kind of person behind the wheel. Because that's who's going to be buying them. All she's missing is a cell phone in one hand and a coffee in the other. :?

I had the same thought. Although I think bulkier might be a better word.

Don't get too worked-up about weight.

The G37 has a Base Curb Weight of 3791 lbs.

The 2010 Legacy GT should weigh around 3300-3450 lbs.

infiniti-esque front

maxima-esque fenders

accord/camry-esque rear

Image-esque chicken n waffles

then again it's the base model in the pics. just about every base model legacy has been relatively uninspiring (if not a bit less bulky than this people mover). i'm reeeeally hoping the gt/spec b models make it somewhat palatable.

I was referring to the look not the actual weight. it doesn't look bulky, it looks fat.

Subaru is working hard to make sure I don't replace Betty with another Subaru.

Here here! Hopefully the GT will have more hair on it's nuts... ... ... ... ...so to speak.

If your first impression is "It could have been worse..." that's not good first impression.

There's something Lexus-y about the rear, for me. The head lights look face-lifted. Literally.

I have mixed feelings about it...I am still probably going to get a 09 Spec B once I get a darn job...LOL...

I concur. A real let down after the concept car. They took the old and just barely tweaked here and there...this one shown is not good in my book. Too plain jane.

were it not for the stickers and the dual exhaust, i'd have thought for sure it was a white camry.

i understand why subaru is doing what they're doing... i just don't have to like it.

The rear and side looks very similar to the Maxima. The front does look a bit TL/RL.

Didn't you know? Bigger is better.
We learned this in elementary school... sheesh.

(Maybe clientele was complaining that they don't fit?)

I thought that rear shot in the black on the curve looked just like the Hyundai...but I do see TL/RL, Camry, and all the other main competitors blended in to it.

It’s no surprise that most cars within a given segment appear similar. An automaker wants each new iteration of their product to appear to be modern and different from previous models (all the more reason to entice you to buy new). Yet they also don’t want to go too modern or too different. That would potentially alienate their existing customers. They want it to still appear familiar and therefore more comforting than a completely new design. A re-freshed look on an old face.

As such, most car companies design their cars with one over-arching concern – and it isn’t to look good. It’s to not offend the largest possible demographic. So if the design is to be new and modern (yet familiar) it will naturally ape a lot of design cues from competing models ... as well as a few cues from the previous model. Unfortunately, it’s simply too hard and expensive to create a totally new design that most people will like. It’s cheaper and easier to make a near knock-off. This is especially true of “bread and butter” models – the cars upon which a company makes most of their profit.

So you get the latest Impreza sedan – which looks amazingly like a Corolla. And now the new Legacy – which looks like a Camry or Sonata. Neither car is a looker but neither is repulsive (unless you’re really into design philosophy, I guess).

What I can’t understand is why Subaru went with this after having what I consider to be one of the most original and sexy sedans in recent memory – the 2005-2009 Legacy. I understand the need for a fresh look, but couldn’t there have been an evolution of that design that didn’t morph into … well, every other car on the road?

Beans... They're concerned about the beans. Nobody's feeling adventurous in this market.

Or at least that's my take on it. I agree with Gabe though.

It DOES look like they're using Toyota's cookie cutters now.
