Here I am considering the cost of springing for a 1 terabyte drive, and they've just introduced
a 2 terabyte internal hard drive. Ah, progress!

The 3.5-inch SATA drive features a 32 MB cache and about 1.8TB of actual space once you get things up and running. When Hot Hardware tested the WD drive against its 1TB, 7200RPM peers, the 2TB Caviar more than held its ground in general testing. Read more about those results in the second link.

I'm getting pretty close to being in
desperate need of about five of these.
I just hope I can rebuild the arrays for less than $250/drive.

When I last built the stripe at home, I explained to $wife that we'd just built a new raid, we were only using 338gb, and that we had
two terabytes of free space (thus, went the reasoning, we weren't going to need any new storage for at least two years). A year later, and we've lost one of the drives in the stripe, and one of the spare drives, and we're at 95% capacity on the stripe. Argh. I'd been thinking of getting four 1tb internal drives to replace the > 10 external drives, but it didn't seem like enough of a boost in capacity to justify breaking everything. Looks like we've managed to swing in favor of replacing all those drives.
I suppose it's nice in that it reduces the amount of noise and heat in the living room... I just have to wonder how long storage is going to last at this rate, given we are now storing blu-ray discs and HD episodes of e.g., BSG.

I haven't quite filled up the 2.7TB available in my Drobo but when I do it's good to know that this'll be there.

It's awesome! All I had to do was load it full of drives. It configures itself pretty much. It takes a while to format depending on how much storage you put in there but once that's done you're good to go. Plus I got the DroboShare so now it's a NAS device. They also have, what they call,
DroboApps to give it added functionality. I haven't played around with them yet though. Still trying to get all of my data migrated over.
