T-10 weeks till new cell contract

I have 10 weeks to find a new cell phone and provider but no idea what to get. I can't seem to find 1 phone that has everything I want and nothing I hate. my needs are (relatively) simple: full QWERTY keyboard (i txt more than i talk); decent camera with flash; email support; small size. the two leading contenders are the iPhone and the Glyde. the iPhone's lack of flash and MMS (yes, I use MMS a lot) coupled with a horrible txt interface rules it out for me. the Samsung Glyde hardware is great but the UI get's really bad reviews. the dark horse is the G1 but T-Moble's limited coverage area in places I travel to frequently rules it out (and the physical size of the G1 doesn't help it's case).
what to do, what to do...
I guess I'll end what is essentially a rant with this modest request:
can anybody port Android to a Glyde for me?

play around with one of our jailbroken iphones before you hate on it. landscape email is possible through a free app, and landscape sms/mms are only a jailbreak away. much easier to type.
then again, if you are mainly striving for dedicated qwerty/email/camera/good native sms in a small, sturdy package (i said package), you might want to think about a blackberry. the curve or the bold come to mind. my curve was the best phone i've ever had **until i got the jesus phone**.

i drank the koolaid. i did. it's true. that's not to say that i'm not still pulling for research in motion to get their shit together and redesign the bb storm to make it a viable competitor. it needs a redesigned OS that was built solely for a touch-screen device instead of the bb bold's OS with a few bandaids.

I was going to suggest a Blackberry as well. Any reason you didn't have one on your list?

I'm not a big fan of RIM after dealing with the BBYs for a few years as an exchange admin at Dept of Education. also I really want something small that I can fit in my pocket. women have it easy, they're allowed to carry a bag for all their gadgets. we men have to fit everything in the front pocket of a pair of jeans.

god damn you're picky.
fyi the curve fits quite well in pockets. you'd forget it's there most of the time (unless someone emails you. hiyoooooo).

agreed. the curve is quite possibly *the best* mating of blackberry OS and form factor.
Unless you really, really,
reeeeeely aren't concerned about push email.
of course i do loves me some jesus phone. but that's not particularly surprising either.

If you're willing to go month to month on your current plan, there's a ton of Android phones scheduled to come out next year. I adore my G1, but it is quite possibly the largest phone I've ever owned.

that's an awesome point! i totally forgot about t-mo's month to month. IIRC, you can go month to month on minutes, with only a recurring data charge. No contract, no fuss.
(I wish att would do something similar.)

Let us know what you finally wind up going with once the paperwork is signed and the compromises are made.

More phones to choose from then at least, but that really does suck.

Yea, mine is around May as well. But my phone is starting to give up the ghost, problem with the speaker connection, failing buttons... lets see, $100 deductible on device replacement, or $175 to get out early and get phone and service I actual like... gee, tough choice.

in your situation it's pretty clear what to do. but so far mine has held up fairly well but after 2 years she has some quirks...

I did too. I'm riding out my Verizon contract. I'm getting an iPhone in December for the foreign language support. I do loads of web-browsing on my phone, and it's a pain not to have asian language support. ATT's 3G is also way faster than Verizon's, in addition to the Wi-Fi support. After fiddling with their text input, I found it was better than I had first assessed.

Agreed and agreed. There's a lot of unknowns and unproven ideas there.
