Ipod Touch and linux...help

Hello Everybody. I recently picked up an Ipod Touch, but am having some issues using it in Ubuntu 8.10. It has already been sync'd with Itunes (Windows version) and a few songs and videos copied over. Basically, I can't manage it in Ubuntu. I've tried using Amarok and Rythmbox. Ubuntu mounts the device, but thats as far as I get. I can plug my previous Ipod Video and it is recognized with Amarok and Rythmbox, but not the Touch. I also have Virtualbox 2.0.4 installed with an Windows XP environment. When I try to share the Touch with the XP environment, I receive an error message that says, "Location is already mounted", but when I use my Ipod Video, it works just fine. Does anyone have any ideas? Both Ipods have the factory configurations.

If you picked up the second generation iPod Touch (Nike+, etc) than you're pretty much screwed.

The hash used on the folder structure hasn't been reverse engineered yet.

If you can get your hands on a first generation touch, you should be good to go, as it should only require jailbreaking.

Hope this helps and not hurts. :?

FWIW, here's a support page that covers the firmware versions available for syncing.

Update: Well I installed VMware with Win XP and was able to mange the Itouch. I still receive the error from Ubuntu about the location is already mounted, but I am still able to use it within XP. :D. I know, seems kinda dumb to be using VMware just for itunes but oh well, it works for the mean time. Thx for the help!

Yeah....seems like a waste of a valuable tool. It's not an ideal solution, but can hold me over in the mean time.

Think of it this way. You're not using vmware to interface with your Apple product, you're using it to interface with idiots who are too stupid to write a proper user interface. Thus, using VMWare (I use VirtualBox) to manage your iPod is much the same as using it to run MS Project so you can fill out your stupid TPS reports. Er, wait.

Using software to interface with idiots: nothing to be ashamed of. Otherwise, you'd be an idiot. Right?

lol. True Statement. I guess as my handle hints otherwise though :o .

Yeah, for some reason, I can't get VirtualBox to work with the Itouch. It works for the current gen shuffle and nano and last two gens of the Ipod Video, but not for the current gen Itouch.

Update: Well, it works in Virtualbox now

I did a bit more searching and read that a few people had gotten it to work with SP3 for windows XP. So, I installed SP3 and it still didn't work, but I started to get an error code from Itunes. (0XE0000085). I did a little bit of searching and came across a ticket submitted to Virtualbox. In future revisions they plan on fixing this error, but write now there is just a work around. Reading through the error, it turns out the max usb buffer value is set incorrectly in the kernel. It needs to be 128k. Once the changes are made, the kernel needs to be recompiled.

http://www.huanix.com/2008/11/03/fixing ... indows-xp/

This guy though, wrote a script that would update all the kernel values and automatically recompiled the kernel. He also made sure the other settings were correct. I wound up running the script. It took a total of 40 mins and then I rebooted when I was done. I started XP, and there it was. It worked perfectly. I was able to sync it NP. I was told not to do firmware updates this was though. It was better to connect it to a Mac or Windows machine. They had experienced some issues in the past where the Ipod had to be restored after a firmware update.
