MSI Wind

I've been thinking about picking up an MSI Wind to play around with. I'll be doing some travel in the next couple months and I could use a laptop to do some data logging with the WRX. I've also read that the Wind will take a OS X load fairly easily. well compared to other non-apple laptops that is.

Newegg has them for $550 with a $50 mail in rebate.

thoughts?

I'd look at the Gigabyte as well...

Convertable to a small tablet (touchscreen), can make reading and casual gaming much easier.

I think they're all pretty kewl.

Keep in mind the processing power of these guys is more in line with a pentium 4 than a more modern chipset.

But for $500 new, it might be worth a shot.

<--- Thinks they're cute.

the touch screen is cool but the battery life isn't very good with the 4 cell battery. the Wind I priced has a 6 cell battery.

I'm really torn: I'd like to have a laptop but I don't really need one and I REALLY don't have the cash to spare for one. maybe I'll just sit it out a bit longer till I can afford a new Macbook when they get refreshed. oh wait, the money issue... :ugh:

maybe I should give the M912X a second look after all: OS X Touchscreen Netbook: Gigabyte M912X gets the Apple sauce

I've been reading up on the Wind and OS X lately - it looks like the wind is the better box for hackintoshing. It'll support sleep and everything! Not bad for the money!

I'm even tempted... A one laptop family doesn't always work so well.

the Wind gets good reviews but I really do like the touch screen aspect, especially with the added functionality of OS X. decisions decisions....

maybe this is a stupid question but will the Atom powered netbooks play a DVD movie from an external DVD-ROM full screen without issues? I read a review of the Wind that mentioned that it couldn't play 720p content due to the Atom processor not being up to the task.

edit: Wind is sold out at NewEgg :x

Well, how about just going to Best Buy?

I doubt Best Buy will have as good a price as New Egg (if they even have them in stock at all), but it's worth checking. I can't seem to find anybody online with a black Wind with the 6 cell battery for less than $550 now.

I should probably wait until after that Apple press conference to see if the new Macbooks are worth selling a kidney for.

no worries. you know me: I'll talk about buying something like this for months before I pull the trigger. I seem to talk myself into, and then out of, buying a laptop about 5 times a day.

I've got a week long trip to Camp Lejeune coming up, so it would be nice to have one for the trip. but then again...
oh hell, here I go again.
